NZ4013 sunk while under tow after it water-looped taking off from the Segond Channel during a rescue mission on October 11, 1944. The museum says the location of this photo is Emirau Island but there is no specific reference to a flying boat base there. The full photo does show a slipway. There was an airfield complex on the island that was used by the RNZAF. The island was captured from the Japanese in March 1944. Photo from: Air Force Museum of New Zealand

This airframe was allocated G-AFYH in 1940 but it spent the war in Royal Navy service as BT312. Repaired by Southern Aircraft and then sold to British Air Transport for charter flights in a 15-pax configuration. The registration leads one to believe that this was the first Dutch DC-3, but PH-ALI had a lower construction number and was delivered almost six months earlier. PH-ALH captured by the Germans. Used by Lufthansa as D-ABUG and by KG 200 of the Luftwaffe into 1944. Photo from: Amsterdam City Archives

Ex G-ACWJ. Privately owned but tested by the Dutch army during an exercise on 7 July 1936. Pilot Lt Hein Schmidt-Crans crashed at Soesterberg that afternoon, suffering a downdraft and hitting two busses filled with children. No one was hurt but the autogyro was 'crushed'. Registration cancelled in January 1938. Wreck returned to Cierva at Hanworth in 1938. Impressed as AP508 in June 1940 for radar calibration work. C-47s seemed to ignore the Iron Curtain. Ex 43-15073, OK-XDM served with ÄŒSA from 1946 until 1960. It was sold to France, then to Yugoslavia and is on display at Merville, Normandy since 2007. Note: ex Panagra DC-3 N18119 (c/n 1995) was on display as "OK-XDM" for some time. In the foreground is a LOT Polish Airlines C-47A, SP-LCE, ex 42-100826 (c/n 19289). This one ended up in Iran. LHBP airport was dedicated in 1950. The concrete control tower was apparently thought to be pretty as there were two of them, for reasons of symmetry only. Photo from: Fortepan

The small Peto was designed to operate from submarines. The aircraft was housed in a waterproof hangar and catapulted over the bow. After the aircraft alighted next to the sub, a crane would lift it back on deck. Tested on the sub HMS M2 until N181 was damaged at Gibraltar. It was rebuilt with several improvements and given the new serial N255. Lost with HMS M2 and all its 60 crew on January 26, 1932. The sub and plane were left on the bed of Lyme Bay after a failed salvage attempt. A second Peto, N182, crashed in 1930. Photo from: Air Force Museum of New Zealand
