Another Ar 66 crash on Dutch territory. The military pilot lost his way en route from Salzwedel to Wilhelmshafen and landed in the province of Groningen. He tried to take off again but hit a car and a cyclist who was killed. The pilot was court-martialled in Germany. The farmhouse stands little changed today. Its street address is in Spijk, but most sources give the hamlet of Zijldijk as the accident location. Photo by: W Hijlkema / Groninger Archieven

Photo probably taken on 19 April 1958 when this Flying Banana hired by Sabena exceptionally flew on the Rotterdam route. It was normally used around Brussels during Expo 58 which opened two days earlier. N74058 also flew a Amsterdam - Rotterdam trial service on behalf of Schreiner Aero Contractors in November 1958 but then it was no longer allowed to use this central heliport. Original colour picture. Both the DC-2 and the Groningen airport terminal were built in 1935. PH-AKQ was named Kwak (night heron) through a lack of birds beginning with Q. Bagged by the Germans in 1940, becoming D-AEAN with Lufthansa and SG-KV in the Luftwaffe. Captured by the RAF at Flensburg in May 1945 and allocated serial VP102. Last noted at Lüneburg in December 1945. Photo by: Hans Schade / Groninger Archieven

Another view of this reconnaissance seaplane in the Dardanelles, for the other photo (click here). Note the submarine, and how the Union Jack could be confused with a German cross in certain conditions. Roundels are already worn on the wings.
