The Aeromarine 75 could seat about ten passengers and was a civil conversion of the American-built Felixstowe F.5L, itself based on a Curtiss design. Civil aviation in America lagged behind Europe through lack of government support, but Aeromarine's own airline was quite innovative, with branches in Florida and New York plus a Detroit - Cleveland service across Lake Erie. The Great Lakes Division only lasted from July 1922 until September 1923 though. In other photos its aircraft carry names and a light paint job. Here the rear fuselage reads 'Aerial Express' and a British contemporary source mentions the Aerial Express Company of Detroit. Photo from: Wayne State University

This was to be the last Albatross in the US Navy, departing Guantanamo for the Pensacola museum 15 years later on 12 August 1976. The Douglas JD-1 Invader was a target tug or target drone director. The photo was made at the OPAS base, but it is not confirmed if that was at the Bigwood Lake location, it is possible that it was at another location in Sioux Lookout. G-CYAH was struck off charge in November 1924. Photo from: Canada Science and Technology Museum

Spectacular livery at a time when it had to be hand-painted, Big Fish was operated by American Trans Oceanic from the shores of Lake Worth to New York. The aircraft was never civil registered - it was not a requirement at the time -but was given the number 5, presumably a fleet number. Big Fish crashed sometime during 1921.
