Flight deck view of D-CDLH showing the relatively modern instrumentation of this old lady. The original D-AQUI was built for Lufthansa at Dessau. First flown on April 6, 1936, it was delivered our days later use on the Copenhagen-Gothenburg-Oslo coastal route. July 1 that year, it passed on to Det norske Luftfartsselskap as LN-DAH. After serving with Lufthansa during WW2, it was returned to DNL after a post-war rebuild as LN-KAF and joined SAS' fleet when that airline was established in 1946 serving there the next ten years,

This Tante Ju was built in 1939 and TOC with the Swiss AF A-703. In October 1982 it was registered HB-HOP and then spent the next years operating pleasure flights for Ju-Air. After the tragic crash of sister-ship HB-HOT in 2018 the operating and maintenance licences were revoked for other Swiss-based Ju 52 aircraft. This effectively grounded HB-HOP (and another Ju-Air Ju-52 HB-HOS) and so the plane is now retired and on display at this superb museum.

If you have been spotting at FRA, you may have noted the name of the village Zeppelinheim. The airport opened to aircraft and airships in July 1936 but its two huge airship hangars were already demolished in 1940. The Fw 200 Condor, D-ADHR Saarland, dates the photograph in July 1938 at the earliest. The second Ju 52 is D-ALUN Kurt Wintgens and the leftmost aircraft is a Ju 86 which can only be D-AJUU Vogelsberg. Photo from: Fortepan

Photo described as 'opening of Fornebu' but neutrality markings and blacked-out windows make clear the shot was taken after the outbreak of WWII. The aircraft seems to be painted orange overall. We assume ABA service to Oslo ceased with the German invasion in Norway. Date may be 22 November 1939 when SE-AFA flew the first service between Stockholm and Perth in Scotland, as an alternative to London, with a very experienced crew - Bernt Balchen and Karl Gunnar Lindner. Situated on an islet in the Oslo Fjord, Oslo's first airport maybe wasn't very practical, but it was surely idyllic! Brand new in the summer of 1936, this Ju 52 was captured by the German army in 1940 and put in Lufthansa service as D-AQUI. Returned to DNL as LN-KAF in 1946. Scrapped, but the wings were used to restore c/n 130714, which later became Lufthansa's vintage Tante Ju 'D-AQUI' - see photo 70519 for details. Photo from: Nasjonalbiblioteket (Norway)

Another interesting puzzle. The Ju 52 production list quickly revealed the aircraft name, but also that Lufthansa had four Iron Annies named Olaf Bielenstein between 1935 and 1945. The source says this is a 'German naval station', implying a wartime shot. However, a look under the wing rules out D-AVAJ, D-AIAG and D-ASHB, so this must be D-APOR, which served on the DLH route to Oslo in 1936. To Syndicato Condor as PP-CBF in 1938. To Argentine air force in 1946 as T-155. To Argentine ministry of Agriculture in 1951 as LV-ZBH and even returned to service as late as 1956. Photo from: National Museum of Denmark

Ex Spanish Air Force T.2B-165, D-CIAK. Widely quoted as c/n 96, and officially registered as such. But recent research has confirmed that T.2B-165 was c/n 56. The number 96 may be its fuselage number.
