During WW2 it operated Spifire Marks I, II, and V. The squadron served into the jet age operating the Gloster Meteor when it and all other RAuxAF squardrons were disbanded in 1957.

This was the extensively rebuilt second FB-1 Gyrodyne. The P2V-5s had US Air Force rather than US Navy serials, 51-15914 in the case of WX493. Photo believed taken before delivery to No 217 Sqn in January 1952. The seaside location seems to be the unit's new base, Kinloss.
