The first of six Rangoons. They served mostly outside the UK. The service life was brief - 1931 to 1935. S1433 was stripped of military equipment and registered G-AEIM in 1936. The small Peto was designed to operate from submarines. The aircraft was housed in a waterproof hangar and catapulted over the bow. After the aircraft alighted next to the sub, a crane would lift it back on deck. Tested on the sub HMS M2 until N181 was damaged at Gibraltar. It was rebuilt with several improvements and given the new serial N255. Lost with HMS M2 and all its 60 crew on January 26, 1932. The sub and plane were left on the bed of Lyme Bay after a failed salvage attempt. A second Peto, N182, crashed in 1930. Photo from: Air Force Museum of New Zealand

Originally built for an Australian customer, L9786 was passed to the Air Ministry after the order was cancelled. Short fitted it with a central float that was a scale replica of that used on the Sunderland. L9786 was delivered to Felixstowe where it continued to be used for test flying for many years. It crashed into the River Clyde on March 14, 1944 while deployed to RAF Helensburgh in Scotland. Photo from: Air Force Museum of New Zealand

From 2 FTS at Ternhill. Carried out an air-sea rescue demonstration as part of the recruiting event on Southend Seafront (see #798148 & #798149). Went tech, necessitating a visit by another 2 FTS example, XP338 "N", from Ternhill with spares. Preserved with the Norfolk and Suffolk Aviation Museum at Flixton.

Built to test Saunders' metal hull design by replacing the wooden one on a Supermarine Southampton II. The new hull showed signs of structural weakness after 50 hours. Despite strengthening, the hull continued to deteriorate and the test program ended at 75 hours. Saunders persisted with the design and the same construction technique was used on the Cutty Sark, Cloud, Windhover and London. Photo from: Air Force Museum of New Zealand
