First with KLM from 23.11.57 as PH-VIH then to Aer Lingus ('St Fergal') on 8.7.66; leased to BAF from 31.3.70 to 27.9.71 and broken up at Dublin 1972. Interestingly, was to have been sold to Air Vietnam by Aer Lingus

One of Southend's 'Golden Viscounts' captured very shortly before her complete demise, Hotel Kilo was delivered by Vickers to Continental as N246V on 1.8.58. When Channel Airways acquired 11 Viscounts from Continental in 1966/7, the existing livery was adopted almost fully, receiving little more than a change of titling

This, the 10th Carvair conversion, was delivered to BUAF in 8.63 but immediately went to work with Alisud in Italy for six months. Changing name from "Channel Bridge" to "Big Joe" when BUAF became BAF in 1967, she was bought by TAR in 3.69 but leased back in 4.72, reverting to G-ASKG with BAF in 3.73. Fred Olsen's Commandos were a regular part of the Southend scene in the Sixties but I was lucky to capture this one on what was probably my first ever roll of Kodachrome. This 1944-vintage example was bought by the Norwegian line as far back as 11.57; sold as XW-PHM in 6.71 and resident in SE Asia till broken up at Seletar in 1979 as N336CA

Looking immaculate here, this short-nose Prince was delivered to Shell Petroleum in 1950 and flown by famous WWII pilot Douglas Bader before being sold to Venezuela as YV-P-AEQ later that year. She came back to Britain in 1953 and was used by the Sperry Gyroscope Co, then Decca Navigator based at Biggin Hill in 1961. Registration cancelled on export to the USA in 11.76 and ferried to Van Nuys where she remained in derelict condition as N206UP. Now on private land at Antelope Acres, CA

Enjoying a Scandinavian career all her active life, this Friendship was newly delivered to Norway in 3.64 in Braathens colours (memories of the Airfix kit when they changed it from Aer Lingus) and was transferred to Air-Executive during 11.75 in this modified livery. Later repainted in Busy Bee colours, she was sold to Air Nordic Swe in 6.93 as SE-KZD. Wfu at Woensdrecht three years later; dismantled and reassembled as an emergency trainer at Oudehaske (NL) in 4.04

Just four of this 18-seat French design were built from 1961, perhaps providing some of the inspiration behind the later Jetstream which also used the strange Astazou turboprop, albeit two less of them. Note the Caravelle-style windows, said to be intended to lessen the need for blinds. I was surprised to learn recently that this aircraft survives, having crash-landed at Sumburgh in the Shetlands in 3.81. Now in private hands having been hauled off the airport, the owner hoping to eventually restore

I've shot a pretty wide range of interesting subjects in that spot over the years, before or after attention in the hangar, but this must be one of the most unusual, rating as Southend's only ever Tupolev visitor. Originally Balkan's LZ-TUS in 9.78 and converted to corporate configuration around 1995; sometimes used as personal transport of the famous chess champion Gary Kasparov. To RusLine 8.06 and Kosmos 6.09; broken up at Nizhniy Novgorod in 3.16
