This Javelin made the last ever flight of type when it was delivered to Duxford in January 1975, after service with the A&AEE at Boscombe Down where chase and calibration work had included trials as part of the SC.9, Concorde and MRCA programmes. It was orinaly built as an FAW.7 and served 5, 25 and 33 Sqdns before acquiring the high visibility paintwork with A&AEE. My shot here shows it taking off from Coltishall in 9173

Floats removed during the current AirSpace reorganisation upheaval. Duxford's Sunderland was built by Short Brothers at Rochester as the first production Mk V. The primary improvement over the Mk III was the replacement of the 965hp Bristol Pegasus engines by 1,200hp Pratt & Whitney R-1830 Twin Wasps. After postwar Aeronavale service, the aircraft became badly derelict and a massive restoration effort by Duxford Aviation Society volunteers from 1976 and through the 1980s brought it back to the superb condition in which it is now on show

This 1957-vintage Whirlwind saw action with several different Naval Air Squadrons (845, 820, 701, 848, 847 & 705) and when reading the service history of such old generation helicopters it is notable just how many incidents and mishaps they were involved in. To RNAY Wroughton in December 1974 and Duxford by road in October 1975. Now one of only two aircraft that remain suspended from the AirSpace roof
