An overview of colour schemes in the WW2 era: Me-109 in the back wear the early markings with large serial and roundels. When war was eminent the aircraft received smaller serial, red rudder and a red fuselage band in April 1940, as seen on the C-3603. As American pilots often did not recognize Swiss over German aircraft the 'Neutralitätsanstrich'(neutrality colours) were introduced in September 1944 with red and white stripes and a white cowling. The D-3801 and Bu-181 sport these colours.

The Bestmann was not a regular in the Swiss air force, but no less than six Luftwaffe aircraft were interned and one Swiss-owned machine requisitioned during the war. The original A-251 was German factory call sign SJ-SS. This preserved aircraft is really a licence-built Swedish Bestmann.

Probably a delivery flight. The Romanian state airline received four L-14s in September 1938 and Zürich was not a regular destination. Aircraft survived the war and was struck off the Romanian register in 1953. Photo from: ETH-Bibliothek Zürich

This Dragon Rapide was owned by the Prince of Wales who became King Edward VIII in 1936. He abdicated in the same year to marry Wallis Simpson. The plane wore a bold red and blue livery. The photo source does not mention the owner but his pilot, Wg Cdr Edward 'Mouse' Fielden, appears in another shot. Photo from: ETH-Bibliothek Zürich
