This F-86A on display at the Udvar-Hazy Center of the National Air and Space Museum was assigned to the 4th Fighter Interceptor Group at Langley Air Force Base, Virginia, in July 1949. It was shipped to Japan in December 1950 with other F-86s of the 4th Group, and flown in Korea. Most of its combat missions against Mig-15s were flown from Kimpo Air Base near Seoul. It is displayed in the pre-June 1952 markings of the 4th Fighter Wing, the first F-86 unit in Korea.

The Army Air Corps purchased six Stinson Voyagers from Vultee in 1941 for testing. The aircraft were adapted for purpose to become fundamentally a new design. The Army designated it first as the O-62 (observation) and then as the L-5 (liaison). This aircraft, on display at the Udvar-Hazy Center, was the first O-62/L-5 produced but, unfortunately, nothing is known of it's service life.

Tandem-wing aircraft designed by Samuel Langley in 1903. The pilot sat on the open fuselage structure mid-way between the two sets of wings. The design was unstable and the machine crashed into the water after a few seconds on each of its two attempts to fly. After modifications in 1914 it flew for short distances. It is now displayed in the NASM in its original 1903 form.

In total 294 examples of this superb night-fighter were constructed. Advanced features included cannons mounted to fire at an oblique angle, the first steerable nosewheel on an operational German aircraft and the world's first ejection seats on an operational aircraft. This Uhu (Eagle Owl) was recovered from Grove in Denmark and shipped to the US in 1945 aboard HMS Reaper. The He 219 A-2 wing is under restoration and will be re-assembled with the fuselage and engines on display at the Udvar-Hazy Center.

This is the sole surviving true JRS-1 amphibian and is the only aircraft in the Smithsonian collection that was stationed at Pearl Harbor on 7th Dec. 1941, being one of ten JRS-1s at the base when the Japanese attacked. All survived and were immediately pressed into service and flew many missions patrolling for Japanese submarines and searching for the enemy fleet. It was acquired by the Smithsonian in 1960 and is now in the Mary Baker Engen Restoration Hangar at the Udvar-Hazy Center.

The Halberstadt CL.IV was one of the best ground attack aircraft of World War I. It performed well in combat as a low-level attack airplane, relying on its good maneuverability to avoid ground fire. This WWI combat veteran was one of three restored by Deutsches Technikmuseum in Berlin, being completed in June 1991 and is now on display at the Smithsonian's Udvar Hazy Center.

This Recruit was originally destined to be a float plane trainer in the Netherlands East Indies. However, the sale fell through after the territory surrendered to Japanese forces in May 1942. It was then used as an USAAF trainer as 42-57481 until declared surplus late in WWII. After many private owners it is now on display in the NASM Udvar-Hazy Center.

The Bellanca CF high-wing monoplane was designed by Italian immigrant Giuseppe Bellanca, embracing a completely new vision and design in the early 1920s. Bellanca visualised the CF as a commercial transport aircraft but it was too far ahead of it's time before any market really existed. Only this example was built and it is now on display at the Udvar-Hazy Center.

This P-38 never saw combat, rather was allocated to be an experimental airframe at Wright Field, OH and then at the end of WWII it was placed into storage. It is now on display with this unrestored finish at the super NASM Udvar-Hazy center.

With this aircraft the famed racing pilot Roscoe Turner became the only three-time winner of the Thompson Trophy (his first win in 1934 was in a different aircraft). He retired from racing to manage the Turner Aeronautical Corporation in Indianapolis until his death in 1970. This racer hung in a prominent place from the rafters of his main hangar until restored and placed in the Turner Museum. With the closing of his museum in late 1972, the racer was gratefully received by the NASM.
