The Schweizer company model number is Schweizer SA 2-38A. It is a redesign of the single-engined Schweizer RG-8A (2-37A) drug interdiction surveillance aircraft. It was registered in Jul-1997 as N61449, but had become USCG 8103 when flight testing began on 10-Jul-1998. This was done by the Air Force 445th Flight Test Squadron at Edwards AFB on behalf of the Coast Guard. It was delivered to the Coast Guard in Miami, FL in 1999 for drug interdiction missions over the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean. Reported to have been grounded in 2000 due to problems with meeting mission requirements and serviceability. Its civil registration N61449 was kept valid, but was cancelled in Oct-2013.

From 1926, SISA (Società Italiana Servizi Aerei) flew passenger services between Turin, Venice and Trieste with seaplanes, following the river Po. At Pavia there was a stop on the Ticino tributary. The Idroscalo building here still stands, but unfortunately in a poor state of repair. I-OLTG destroyed July 1932. The single-engined, four-passenger CANT 10 was replaced by CANT 22 trimotors such as I-AACM, registered on 5 April 1930, on the left. Postcard.

The Dodecanese Islands were an Italian territory in the Aegean Sea - Mar Egeo in Italian. A surviving 1935 timetable shows that Ala Littoria flying boats took almost three and a half hours from Brindinsi - Idroscalo Civile to Athens and two and a half hours from Athens to Rhodes. Developed from the S.55, the S.66 could carry 18 to 22 passengers - nine to eleven in each hull. The type saw service as a rescue aircraft during WWII. Photo by: Franz Grasser

Made the first flight of an aircraft in New Zealand in February 1911 from Glenora Park which was part of private racetrack. The site is now housing but there is a bronze plaque marking the site. Howard Wright was an English aircraft designer active from 1908 to 1911. Seven 1910 Biplanes were built. The Walsh Bros continued in aviation and after World War I operated a flying school that became the basis of New Zealand's air force. Photo from: Museum of Transport and Technology

In 1941, Langley Aircraft of Port Washington, Long Island, named for aviation pioneer Samuel Langley, built this twin-engined four-seater of a mahogany plywood composite material. This was known as a plastic and so this was called a 'plastic plane'. Photo date and fate of this prototype unknown, but by 1942 the attention would have shifted to the 2-4-90 second aircraft with 90-hp engines, bought by the US Navy as the XNL-1 trainer. Ironically, the 'non-strategic' plywood plastic turned out to be scarcer than aluminium. Port Washington had no runways and we found the photo was taken ten miles away at Roosevelt Field. The large hangar was just one in a row of seven. Photo by: Rudy Arnold / Smithsonian Institution

The Rudy Arnold files at the NASM contain some photos of British aeroplanes clearly not taken by Arnold, with potty dates such as 12 November 1938 for this one. This is the first prototype of the Short Singapore, which eventually led to the four-engined, triple-finned S.19 Singapore III. N179 first flew on 17 August 1926 and is seen on the River Medway near the Short factory, with Rochester Cathedral visible and Rochester Castle behind the propeller. The Arado Ar 95 was rejected as a shipborne scout for Germany's warships. Despite this V3 prototype's registration, it was probably a much better aircraft than the Heinkel He 114 which turned out to be a failure. The Ar 95 was offered for export, but this demonstration in Norway did not yield an order. Meanwhile the lighter, faster Ar 196 monoplane was accepted for the embarked scout role - a questionable decision because in this role, robustness and seaworthiness were far more important than performance. Starting its ascent at Balloon Mela '85 at Safdarjung Airport before Pres. Zail Singh, French balloonist G. de Colonne who participated in the World Championships in 1983 at Nantes takes the Canson balloon on its course. Sponsored by the paper mill Canson & Montgolfier, it was the latter family that built the first hot-air balloon in 1783. Interesting to think of the 200-year connection with flight by the Montgolfier brothers, even performing before King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette.
