In the early 1960s, the USAF investigated the conversion of the Cessna T-37 jet-powered primary trainer for counterinsurgency missions. This lead eventually to the successful development of the YA-37A and the subsequent conversion of 39 T-37s into A-37s for use in Vietnam. This YA-37A was retired to the National Museum of the USAF for display in July 1970.

The Super Courier was a light utility transport with excellent STOL capability that allowed it to operate from a clearing the size of a football field. This along with its ability to fly slowly at speeds of approximately 30 mph made it an excellent aircraft for visual reconnaissance and as a FAC. This U-10D on display at the National Museum of the USAF is painted and marked as an aircraft assigned to the 5th Air Commando Squadron in SE Asia in 1968.

This is not the original 82-1070 'Spirit of Ohio', rather one of two additional aircraft Northrop constructed without engines or instruments for fatigue testing. This example was used for stress testing on the airframe (it was discovered that the wings could withstand 161% of the design specs stress load before cracking) before being retired to the National Museum of the USAF for display.

It was such a thrill to walk amongst all these magnificent, iconic aeroplanes and the mightily impressive B-1 is right up at the top of the list. This Bone served previously with the 7th Bomb Wing at Dyess and is a Operation Desert Fox combat veteran but was retired to the museum during Sept. 2002.

Originally 132649 with the Navy, when the USAF took it on strength they gave it an s/n compatible with their system by adding the FY number. The NMUSAF lists it officially as 52-132649. This Skyraider was flown by Maj. Bernard Fisher on 10th March 66 to rescue another pilot shot down over South Vietnam, an action for which Fisher was awarded the Medal of Honor. The aircraft was sevely damaged in combat and came to the National Museum of the USAF in 1967 for restoration and preserveration.

The USAF used the Huskie primarily for crash rescue and aircraft fire-fighting. This example is one of approximately 175 Bs purchased and it established seven world records in 1961-1962 for helicopters in its class; for rate of climb, altitude and distance travelled. It was assigned to rescue duty with Detachment 3, 42nd Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Squadron, Kirtland Air Force, NM, prior to its retirement and display at the National Museum of the USAF in April 1973.

Surely the most famous all the C-141s that served with the USAF, 'Hanoi Taxi' is on display at the National Museum of the USAF. With the exception of a Red Cross this is the scheme she wore for the two flights to Hanoi in 1973 to rescue POWs.

This Fisbed-D version includes the addition of a radar in the engine inlet cone to enable it to become an all-weather and night intercepter. However, in order to maintain the streamlined appearance the guns had to be removed and so this version relied solely on rockets for armament. This example served previously with the Hungarian AF before being acquired in 1998 by the National Museum of the USAF where it us now on display.

This Avro-built Cierva Autogiro was built in 1934 and imported into Australia, being registered on 14 June 1935. It was used by Engineer Andrew Thyne Reid for private flights, including between his properties in Sydney and Yass. Impressed during the war, it was used in trials for the development of a 'flying jeep' autogyro. Returned to Reid after the war, he continued to use it until 1949. Subsequently donated to the Royal Aero Club of NSW, later purchased by the Powerhouse Museum where it is on display.

One of only 19 Jackaroos built, they are often considered to be Tiger Moths on which they were based. They were however substantially different. The cockpit was widened and enclosed and the fuselage lengthened to make a four seat touring aircraft and the first conversion flew in 1957
