No stranger to JFK having started out in 6.69 as Eastern's N8760, this Super Eight was sold to Balair in 12.72 and then to UPS in 12.85 as N874UP, quickly being re-engined and converted to Srs 73PF spec. Was part of an active fleet of some 40 of this classic type, wfu at Roswell, NM 2011

The unforgettable sight of a DC-4 taxiing to the soundtrack of a Lancaster! This Argonaut was built in 1947 and served the RCAF till 1966. Here on one of her last ever journeys, with the Air Turks "AT" logo on the fin, she was stored at Sarasota soon after this slide was captured and sadly broken up during 1976

This bizarre experimental design was intended to lead to a VTOL ship-based convoy escort fighter but not surprisingly proved difficult to fly. Powered by a very unreliable Allison YT40-A-6 turboprop consisting of two T38s coupled together, it made a first untethered flight and transition to the horizontal in 8.54 - the first successful VTOL flight in history in an aircraft that was not a helicopter or an autogiro. Three were built but this was the only one to fly. Now stored for the NASM

I can recall even the locals thought this was a rare subject at the time, as it had only been with the Viasa subsidiary for a couple of weeks. Formerly N8637 of Seaboard, this 1969 aircraft went back to Douglas in 1.82 and on to Connie Kalitta in 2.84, taking up N31EK. Converted to 73CF in 7.85, she joined UPS as N852UP and stored at Roswell, NM from 2013; b/u

TWA was the first owner of this Martin in 6.52, bought by Piedmont in 12.62 and by Southeast some ten years later. In fine form with the innovative rear airstairs lowered, this classic was near the end of her service with the Florida regional at the time of this shot. PBA went on to operate her from the end of 1975, then in late 1986 she found herself working down in the Caribbean until dbr by Hurricane Hugo on 17.9.89 at San Juan, PR. Last noted derelict in a corner there in 2003 and presumed subsequently broken up

The Puerto Rico ANG (or PRANG) was the last operational user of the Starfighter in the USAF (1968-75); never common in American use, the only others by this time were the natural finish aircraft of the Luftwaffe training unit at Luke AFB, AZ. Nice to see another Lockheed classic sharing the ramp. Langley AFB was the first airbase in the US, opened 1916

First flown by the USAAF in 1943 then the USMC, this Commando was converted to Super 46C standard in 1957 and joined Varig, finding her way to Haiti as HH-22 in 8.70. Displaying her Bicentennial "...what so proudly we hail" sticker, this Eastern 727 was shot on the eastern boundary at LGA taxiing to r/w 22. New in 11.67 and to FedEx (N130FE) in 8.80, going on to UPS as N947UP in 1.94. Interestingly, performed a pax flight from MIA in 2.98 but pwfu at Roswell late 2007

Heading out on another hurricane hunting mission, the modifications to this 1957-vintage DC-6 are clearly apparent here. Acquired in 1960 from Trans Caribbean, she was sold to Bellomy-Lawson six months after this shot and modified back to normal configuration. Painted in Challenge AT colours in 1979 and re-registered N98BL in 1983. Broken up at MIA in 1993 after a couple of years in storage
