VAW-115 E-2B about to trap aboard USS Midway. The E-2 has a wide wingspan, so being on centerline at touchdown is critical. Across the deck are the Landing Signal Officers (LSO) who assist the pilots in making a good approach. The LSOs are squadron pilots aboard the ship and specially trained for this duty.

The USS Midway was homeported at Yokosuka Naval Base, Japan. Normal operations in the mid 1970s were conducted all over the western Pacific including the Sea of Japan, the South China Sea, as well as cruises into the Indian Ocean. Here a KA-6D is tensioned on the starboard bow catapult. CV-41 had the highest operations tempo of any Pacific Fleet carrier, and the air wing a/c had a well used look to them.

slide from the NK collection. - After the loss of the prototype (D-BABA) in February 1972, airframes G-02 and G-03 had to perform all the test flights. But despite all efforts, the VFW-614 was never a commercial success, and eventually only 19 aircraft were completed. D-BABB was broken up at Lemwerder in 1980.

F-4N in tension moments before launch. Note that the F-4 used the bridle launch method, the bridle cables seen running from the shuttle behind the nose gear up to hooks located at both wing roots. The F-4 nose gear extends for catapult launches so the wing has more angle of attack. This lowers the takeoff speed thus allowing launches within the capabilities of the catapult. This F-4N is carrying two live AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles. White object in lower left is a video camera recording the launch.

In the early 70s, International carriers were replacing 707s with wide bodies like the 747. Second tier carriers became homes for many, BWIA eventually operating thirteen of them. Scarlet Ibis was in their fleet March 1974 - February 1982. Leases as N29796 and N144SP followed until April 13, 1987 when the Burlington Air Express freighter crashed short of the runway at Kansas City International Airport, MO.

Lease to Seulawah fell through after VH-INM arrived in Jakarta. It was then ferried unregistered to Seletar in Singapore. Two years later it was sold in New Zealand but first needed to be registered in the US so it could be ferried to NZ for first-of-type approval. Ultimately became ZK-NWB. Mike Madden photo
