It wears the emblem of autonomous Sturmstaffel 1, which was formed under Maj. Hans-Georg von Kornatzki in mid-Oct 1943. The unit with armour-plated Fw-190s was tasked with developing new Sturm tactics to destroy USAAF heavy bombers, approaching from the rear in tight arrowhead formation. In May 1944, Sturmstaffel 1 was renamed 11./JG 3, which became the nucleus for the dedicated bomber-killer Sturmgruppe IV.(Sturm)/JG 3 "Udet."
