It was still there when the Japanese invaded during World War II and suffered damage during Allied air raids. Danip airstrip fell out of use after the war and it and -UIW were claimed by the jungle. In the 1980s the Junkers was recovered by the PNG defence force first to Madang and then Lae for the National Museum. It is no longer shown as part of the collection.

Pearl Harbor clarified the situation and the C-53s were used between Australia, Philippines and Netherlands East Indies before taken over by the Directorate of Air Transport as callsign VHCCC.The aircraft was transferred to the RAAF from May 43 to Apr 44. It tipped on its nose landing at Nadzab on 28 Feb 44. Repaired it was transferred to Qantas Empire Airways in Jul 44 until Apr 46, when it returned to the USAAF.
