The first company called Bayerische Flugzeugwerke (BFW) existed until 1922 and became BMW. The second BFW was a continuation of Udet Flugzeugbau, and became Messserschmitt. Its first new product was the sole BFW 1 Sperber, a development of the wooden Udet U-12 Flamingo with a steel tube fuselage frame and N-type struts. It first flew in the autumn of 1927 and was sold to aerobatic pilot Alexander von Bismarck in February 1928. From 1929 it was owned by another aristocratic aerobatic pilot, Prince Eugen of Schaumburg-Lippe, and also flown by Oskar Dimphel.

The sole Cruiser I, first flown in May 1932. Original designation 24M (Metal), as the wooden construction of the earlier Mailplane, G-ABLI, was changed to metal. The registered construction number makes no sense and should probably be 24M/1. Aircraft made European sales tour in October 1932. Used by Spartan Air Lines, Isle of Wight from April 1933. Sold to Commercial Air Hire, Croydon Airport, early in 1935. Ditched in The Channel on 11 May 1935 carrying a cargo of newspapers from Paris. Photo from: Dan Shumaker collection
