The Fw 44 Stieglitz (Goldfinch) was one of the best-known training and aerobatic planes of the 1940s and served until the end of WWII as the standard training plane of the Luftwaffe. This example on display at the Deutsches Museum - Flugwerft Schleissheim was built under licence in Sweden by ASJA/Saab and used by the Swedish AF for flight training until 1955. It was then sold to and flown by various private individuals and flying clubs until the 1980s until donated to the museum.

The Mü-10 Milan dates from 1934 and was the first German two-seater high-performance glider and only the second to have a tubular steel/fabric fuselage. In May 1935 the Mü-10 made the first-ever crossing of the Alps by glider, a flight that also set new records for altitude and distance, and was the first aircraft in Bavaria to be certified as a glider after WWII. It is now on display at the Deutsches Museum - Flugwerft Schleissheim.

The Krähe (Crow) is a single-seat motor glider that first flew in 1957, shortly after powered flight was again permitted in the FRG. The most widespread problem was that engines proved unreliable when restarted in flight after being switched off for lengthy periods - not really ideal for a supposedly motorised glider. The aircraft was never commercially manufactured, although about 50 home-built examples are believed to have been produced. The Krähe exhibited here was flown until 1998 and is now on display at Deutsches Museum - Flugwerft Schleissheim.

This Sabre was TOC in 1957 at the West German AF testing facility in Manching. It later served with the evelopment consortium Entwicklungsring Süd as an escort plane for test flights of the German VJ-101C VTOL aircraft. The Sabre was retired in 1968 and arrived at the Deutsches Museum in 1971 for display, after restoration, at the Flugwerft Schleissheim.

The Federal Border Patrol (Federal Police today), stationed this Huey on the opposite side of the Schleissheim airfield. It was used for border patrols, transport and medevac missions. It also took part in disaster relief operations in Ethiopia, during which it flew 550 missions bringing relief goods to drought zones. In its 30 years in operation it accumulated more than 7000 flying hours before being wfu in 2000 and then placed on display at the Deutsches Museum - Flugwerft Schleissheim .

The LFU 205 is one of the first powered aircraft made of fibreglass (GRP -glass fibre reinforced plastic). In the 1960s, Germany had something of a head start with GRP used for aviation purposes glider construction and helicopter rotor blades. This knowledge was to be utilised with the LFU 205 prototype in order to gain experience with highly stressed GRP components. The first flight took place in March, 1968 and after all GRP flight-testing and research had been completed the aricraft was transferred to the DLR. The LFU was wfu in 2017 and flown to Schleissheim for display.

The Bücker Bü 181 was the standard Luftwaffe training plane for beginners, as side-by-side instruction in an enclosed cocpit is ideal, from 1940 until the end of WWII Around 3,400 were produced during the war and continued afterwards in Sweden, Czechoslovakia and Egypt. The complete history of this Bü-181 is not known, although it is nearly certain that it flew with the Luftwaffe. In 1959 It was flown in Saarland with the registration SL-AAS and then was registered as D-ECYV. Its final flight was on August 24, 1997 and is now on display at the Deutsches Museum - Flugwerft Schleissheim.

The Kranich (Crane) is a two-seater high-performance glider developed by Hans Jacobs at the Deutsche Forschungsanstalt für Segelflug (DFS) (German Research Facility for Gliding). It flew for the first time in 1935 and performed so well that it was produced in large numbers right until the end of WWII. This Kranich was built in 1943 and donated to the Deutsches Museum - Flugwerft Schleissheim, where it is now on display.

The C-2.111 is one of about 200 examples produced under licence until 1956 by the CASA in Tablada. After WWII, availability of the German-built Junkers engines was obviously problematic and so CASA used instead the R-R Merlin 500 - these becoming the B and D-versions. This example was retired by the EdA in 1967 but then used in the film 'Battle of Britain. It flew for the last time at in September 1970 and is now on display at theDeutsches Museum - Flugwerft Schleissheim.

The X-31 program tried to improve the manoeuvrability of fighter planes through thrust vectoring, which is performed by three thrust-deflecting "paddles" behind the engine controlled automatically by the digital flight control system. This permits tactical manoeuvres at a 70-degree angle of attack, far beyond the stall angle of conventional aircraft. In total more than 400 flying hours were logged between 1990-1995 and 2001-2003 at Edwards AFB, CA, and NAS Patuxent River. This second and last testbed is now on display at the Deutsches Museum - Flugwerft Schleissheim.

This F-4E was initially deployed to George AFB, CA from 1968-1971. In 1971, it was transferred to Bitburg AB in West Germany for around five years before returning stateside as a training/test frame, most recently at the USAF Test Center in Eglin, Florida. In 1989 it was ferried to the USAF base at Spangdahlem in Germany, where it was used as a ground trainer until it was decomissioned in 1992. It is seen here on display at the Deutsches Museum - Flugwerft Schleissheim, but it has moved to Krakow (PL) since.

This 109 was built in 1938 under licence by Erla Maschinenwerk GmbH in Leipzig. It is one of about forty Emils sent in 1939 to Spain to fight with the Condor Legion alongside the Nationalists. At the end of the conflict it remained in Spain until 1959 with the EdA and is now on display at the Deutsches Museum - Flugwerft Schleissheim in these fake Luftwaffe markings.

This C-47 was built in the USA as 43-49728 and delivered to the RAF (as a Dakota IV) in 1943 as KK209. After WWII it was used as a transport for high-ranking military personnel until 1957 when it joined the GAF and the newly formed Lufttransportgeschwader 61. From 1967 until decomissioning in1976 it was used for testing military air traffic control systems and radio navigation equipment, hence the high-vis markings. The plane is now on display at the Deutsches Museum - Flugwerft Schleissheim

The Ar-66 entered service with the Luftwaffe in 1933 and served as a trainer until the latter stages World War II. This particular aircaft crashed into Lake Starnberg towards the end of WWII, although neither the cause/reasons why this happened nor the fate of the crew are known. The aircraft lay in 80 m of water for about 40 years until it was recovered from the lake in 1983. The hulk is on display at the Deutsches Museum - Flugwerft Schleissheim in the condition as it was found.
