This 109 was built in Leipzig in 1942 and ferried to North Africa, entered service with 8/JG77 and was danaged in combat a few days later. It was flown to Gambut Main for repair but captured essentially intact when this airfield was overrun. She was extensively testes and evaluated before being shipped to the UK where the serial RN228 was allocated. Following a crash at Duxford in 97 it was decided that she should be rebuilt to static display standard and ariived at the RAF Museum in March 02.

The Snipe was introduced just before the end of WWI as a successor to the Sopwith Camel the and proved to be a very effective fighter that remained in RAF service until 1926. This replica was built in New Zealand using an original engine and many original parts and is painted in the colours of FO Dermot Boyle who served with No.1 Sqdn in Iraq in 1926. He later went on to become founding Chairman of the Trustees for the RAF Museum.

Problems with the Centaurus engine resulted in long production delays and, with the end of the war in sight, orders were trimmed. Many surplus aircraft were handed over to the Royal Indian Air Force and PR536 became HA457 in Sept. 1947. Six ex-Indian Tempest IIs were shipped back to the UK in 1979 and this example in the RAF Museum is actually a composite of three aircraft. The forward fuselage of PR536 is supplemented by the wings and the rear fuselage of unidentified Tempest IIs.

Generally I dislike when mannequins are displayed alongside preserved aircraft. In this case, however, I think it works well!

At least for me, this is the single most awe-inspiring exhibit (amongst many) at the RAF Museum. The venerable R5868 flew 137 combat missions making her the most successful extant Lancaster.

The Heliliner was envisioned by Agusta Westland as the civil passenger variant of their multirole medium lift Merlin helicopter. Originally registered G-OIOI for her first flight in April 1990 she acquired this military serial for flight-tests and trials. Upon expiry of her cleared life she arrived at the RAF Museum for display in Nov. 2002.

Developed to be ship-borne catapult launched this type was known as the Walrus in RAF and the Seagull V in RAAF service and went on to save the lives of many ditched airmen. This particular aircraft arrived Down Under in 1936 and served for many years before being transferred to the civilian register in 1951 as VH-ALB, before being repatriated to the UK in 1971 for restoration and eventual display.

This aircraft was built in 1944 as a paratroop transport although its precise service history in the Luftwaffe is unclear. At the end of the war it was earmarked for a private collection in the US but came close to being scrapped before the Air Historical Branch selected it for preservation. Some restoration work was carried out at St. Athan where she was allocated the RAF Maintenance Serial 8471M before arriving at the RAF Museum in 1978.

Due to a severe shortage of aircraft at the outbreak of WWI the G-III was pressed into service by the RFC. The British were much more impressed with the French 80hp Le Rhone engine than the aeroplane that contained it. Rapidly overtaken by advances in aircraft design the G-III was soon relegated to air-training duties. This particular example was built in France in 1916 but nothing is known about it's serial or service life.

Even just building Aifix models of the beaufighter as a kid I thought the type was menacing. Those huge engines meant it could carry a formidable armament turning the type into a very effective night-fighter or ground-attack aircraft. In total 5562 Beaufighters were built serving with 52 operational RAF Squadrons, indeed the last flight was not until 1960 at RAF Seletar. Although displayed with D-day stripes this airframe never flew with the RAF, rather served with the Portuguese Navy as BF-13.

This served with the RAF from 1990 until her final flight on March 4th 2009. She has been on display at the RAF Museum since Oct. 2010. These special black spine/vertical tail markings were given in 2008 whilst serving with 43 Fighter Squadron at RAF Leuchars. The tail code 'GF' is from the squadron motto 'Gloria Finis', traditionally allocated to the CO's aircraft.

The Bolingbroke IV was a Canadian licence built version of the Blenheim IV. This example was delivered to the RCAF in 1942 and served as a gunnery and bombing instructional airframe until struck off charge in 1946. She arrived in the UK during 1968 and underwent restoration before going on display at the RAF Museum in 1978. This aircraft is the former RCAF serial 10001

Envisioned by Westland as a development of their successful Wapiti, the Wallace was rapidly overtaken by aeronautical progress, eventually only finding a role as a trainer or target tug. This example lay abandoned at Cranwell for thirty years and fell into disrepair. Fortunately, restoration was begun in 1987 and she is now on display at the RAF Museum.

Built in 1969 for the Queen's Flight at Yeovil as the penultimate Wessex off the production line. The HCC Mk.4 was identical to the HC Mk.2 except for a special VIP interior, external folding step below cabin door and an additional navigation suite. Served until retirement on 1st April 1998 and delivered to the RAF Museum for display in March 2002.

The Falco was quite possibly the most capable biplane fighter ever produced: the problem was that it was up against Spitfires and Hurricanes, rather than other biplane types. National pride and Mussolini's bluster led a force being sent to take part in the Battle of Britain. On 11th Nov. 1940 this Falco suffered a broken oil pipe and was forced to land on a beach in Suffolk. She was repaired, evaluated by the RAF as BT474, then allocated RAF maintenance serial 8468M and placed into storage before ending up on display at the RAF Museum during 1978.

From a total of over 7,300 Lancasters produced during WWII only 35 completed more than 100 combat missions. The highest number (140) was achieved by ED888, yet she was tragically not selected for preservation and scrapped during Jan. 1947. The venerable R5868 flew 137 combat missions making her the most successful Lancaster still extant.

This was one of 296 B-24s completed at Willow Run during Dec. 1944 and given the USAAF serial 44-50206. Allocated to the RAF, as KN751, under the Lend-Lease agreement she was ferried to India and saw action in SE Asia until the Japanese surrender. She then went on to serve with the Indian Air Force, as HE807, in a maritime patrol role for almost twenty years. In 1974 she was flown to the UK after being donated by the Indian Govt. to the RAF Museum. The SNAKE suffix to the serial indicated that the aircraft was on delivery to the RAF in South East Asia.
