The National Air & Space Museum opened in 1976, one year before I took this slide. The Wright Flyer was suspended in the entrance atrium along with the Spirit of St. Louis, the Bell X-1, and the North American X-15. More recently, the Flyer had its own display gallery.

Two days before the end of WWI, a lost German pilot landed this Fokker D.VII behind allied lines near Verdun. Sent to the USA as a war prize, it was eventually added to the Smithsonian's collection. The aircraft was restored in 1970 in the original markings of pilot Heinz von Beaulieu-Marconnay who landed it over fifty years earlier.

On display at the National Air and Space Museum. The Albatros series suffered from wing failures in prolonged dives. However, it remained a frontline fighter and produced a number of German aces, including Manfred von Richthofen, who scored three-quarters of his 80 victories with the Albatros. This is a late war build that served with Jasta 46 that was formed at Graudenz. It was damaged in combat and was not repaired, eventually finding its way to the USA and was acquired by the Smithsonian.

A gem that belonged to famed aviatrix Amelia Earhart, this Vega is on display in the Barron Hilton Pioneers of Flight Gallery exhibition at the National Air and Space Museum. Calling it her "Little Red Bus", Earhart flew this aircraft non-stop across the Atlantic solo in 1932, becoming the first female pilot and second after Charles Lindbergh to accomplish the feat. In the same year, she set another record in this Vega by flying non-stop alone across the USA.
