When the USA refused export license for further C-130s for South Africa, they turned to France and bought nine Transall C-160Z which arrived between July 1969 and December 1970. To Africair/Wenela Air Service 7 November 1953 first as ZS-DIV, then VP-YSN and A2-ZEN. Returned to the SAAF ca 1980 as the second 6855. Hit by surface to air missile in then South West Africa 1 May 1986, damaged and repaired. Partially converted to C-47TP December 1997, to Dodson Aviation as N914Q 14 July 1998, to Dodson International as ZS-OJJ 15 November 1999, later Rossair, Naturelink, Limpopo Air Service, UN Humanitarian Air Service. During the Border War, the SAAF carried no roundels and the serial number was only carried on the nose. At the time this Dakota was operated by 44 Sqd at AFB Waterkloof. Delivered to the USAAF as 44-76303 9 Feb 145, to the RAF as KN326 18 Feb 1945, and to the SAAF as 6854 9 March 1945. Delivered January 1944 to the USAAF as 42-92595, to the Royal Air Force as Dakota Mk III under lend lease as KG383, and to the South African Air Force as 6829 in 1944. Served the SAAF until December 1995 when sold to South African Airways for their Historical Flight as ZS-BXJ, named Zwartkop. Planned conversion to DC-3C, but used as spares source for ZS-BXF. Operating with 19 Squadron from Louis Trichardt (now Makhado) Air Base. The squadron was the first to become fully operational with the Oryx in 1994.

Flight Systems bought nine SAAF Sabres for conversion to drones. However, only one was converted to QF-86 standard. This 352 was one of the eight not converted and has been flying the air show circuit as N186FS and NX1F. This airframe holds the distinction of being the first aircraft to break the sound barrier over South Africa. On 21 September 1956 Captain J Inglesby of 1 Sqd took 352 into a supersonic dive over AFB Waterkloof.

Ex USAAF 41-34005, allocated to the RAF as EZ132 but delivered directly to South Africa in 1944. Became ZU-AOU with the Harvard Club of South Africa in late 1995 and current with them in 2025.

Retired from operational flying in September 1995, shortly after this shot was taken. After a period of storage at Waterkloof it was restored to flight in 1999 for the SAAF Historic Flight becoming ZU-DMD and wearing the famous 'Skydancer' colours of the South African Flag. Problems with spare parts and funding have long since grounded the aircraft but it remains in storage at Hoedspruit.
