During the 1960s, the South African Air Force recognized the requirement for an inshore maritime patrol and fisheries surveillance aircraft. With an already established relationship with Piaggio the P-166 was chosen. Named Albatross in SAAF service, the first was delivered in October 1969; 884 was delivered the same December. The fleet was retired in 1992/1993 and replaced by Dakotas, the very aircraft the Albatross replaced. 884 was sold as ZS-NJX in June 1993. The SAAF introduced the King Air as a communications aircraft in the early 1980s. Initially they were operated by 21 Sqd on civilian register offering extra discretion when operating to civilian airfields and outside the RSA. The stripes are the same as seen on SAAF DH.125s from the same period. ZS-LNT was delivered in September 1983 and became 654 in October 1995 and later re-registered 650. Photographer unknown

When the USA refused export license for further C-130s for South Africa, they turned to France and bought nine Transall C-160Z which arrived between July 1969 and December 1970. They served with 28 Sqd at AFB Waterkloof alongside the Hercules until the fleet was retired at the end of 1992. Here seen at the then AFB Waterkloof during the 1980 open day. Photographer unknown

Delivered to the USAAF 28 March 1945 as 44-76629, to the RAF as KN483 3 April 1945, and 28 Sqd SAAF as 6881 6 October 1945. To Africair/Wenela Air Service 7 November 1953 first as ZS-DIV, then VP-YSN and A2-ZEN. Returned to the SAAF ca 1980 as the second 6855. Hit by surface to air missile in then South West Africa 1 May 1986, damaged and repaired. Partially converted to C-47TP December 1997, to Dodson Aviation as N914Q 14 July 1998, to Dodson International as ZS-OJJ 15 November 1999, later Rossair, Naturelink, Limpopo Air Service, UN Humanitarian Air Service. During the Border War, the SAAF carried no roundels and the serial number was only carried on the nose. At the time this Dakota was operated by 44 Sqd at AFB Waterkloof. Delivered to the USAAF as 44-76303 9 Feb 145, to the RAF as KN326 18 Feb 1945, and to the SAAF as 6854 9 March 1945. Converted to C-47TP for maritime patrol duties with 35 Sqd, stored from around 2005. Photographer unknown

Delivered January 1944 to the USAAF as 42-92595, to the Royal Air Force as Dakota Mk III under lend lease as KG383, and to the South African Air Force as 6829 in 1944. Served the SAAF until December 1995 when sold to South African Airways for their Historical Flight as ZS-BXJ, named Zwartkop. Planned conversion to DC-3C, but used as spares source for ZS-BXF.
