Another shot of Blue Angels ship '6' - this time plus '5', which was Bu Aer 153876 (c/n 2450) - lost 7.8.73 during airshow at Lake Charles, LA. Pilot ejected safely, but shortly after the Blue Angels transitioned to the more manageable A-4. Look at the serial numbers - they happened to be almost a mirror image too! It may appear like a Photoshop clone job, but I can assure everyone it's straight from the slide. Quite a performance for big heavy jets

About 265 F-4Js were upgraded to F-4S standard between 1979 & 1985, involving strengthening, the fitment of two-position wing leading-edge manoeuvring slats (50% improvement in combat turning capability) and digital weapons control system, plus 'smokeless' J79 engines. Despite the superbly arranged variety of special scheme F-4s, the best efforts of the Phantom Pharewell photoday organisers could not overcome the weather. View of JG.71's blue & gold bird taken from the top of a HAS after a very slippery climb. This machine made its last flight at the show next day, marking the end of 40 years of the F-4 with the Luftwaffe, and will be preserved on the Wittmund gate

The six digit serials of JASDF aircraft may appear random but they conform to a simple system. The first number is the last digit of the year in which the aircraft was delivered, in this case 1980; the second is a type code (7 = F-4); the third is a role code (8 = fighter); and the last three are individual sequence numbers (436 = one of the last in the production block 301 to 440, tying with c/n)
