Three brand-new Hornets passed MCAS El Toro (CA) on this day during their delivery flight to MCB Kaneohe Bay (HI). This 163770/DB-01, ordered in FY87, had a USMC career from August 1989 onwards. It flew with VMFA-235, -232, 212, VMFAT-101, and was then transferred to the US Navy because the airframe was less-stressed in comparison with the US Navy carrier operated Hornets.  It flew with VFA-81, VFA-94 and VFA-106 before it was retired to AMARG on 30 June 2014.

About 265 F-4Js were upgraded to F-4S standard between 1979 & 1985, involving strengthening, the fitment of two-position wing leading-edge manoeuvring slats (50% improvement in combat turning capability) and digital weapons control system, plus 'smokeless' J79 engines. This example was wfu by 6.86 and stored at MCAS Cherry Point
