Approaching over a fortified beach on Kinmen (Quemoy). Shelling of this island by PRC artillery on the mainland started on 23 August 1958. According to online sources the island's old airfield on the west side closed that day, to be replaced by the current Shangyi airport (RCBS) at an unspecified date. Details about the airframe unknown - it seems to wear a FY 42 serial with six sequential digits but it cannot be deciphered. Photo by: John Dominis / Life

Corporate aircraft delivered to tycoon Captain George Whittall in 1936. He owned a vast estate at Lake Tahoe called Thunderbird Lodge. NC16048's registration was cancelled in 1939 as sold in China (CNAC) when the registered owner was Nevada Exploration. The link to Whittall is not known. There is an alternative story for this aircraft and that is it was delivered in 1937 to Pan American which sold it to CNAC. This photo clearly supports the Whittall version. The Starfighter was not very successful in American service but in September 1958, twelve F-104As of the 83rd FIS were sent to Taiwan during the Quemoy Crisis. They had to be flown in disassembled in C-124 Globemasters. 56-791 wore the name Vociferous Viking on the left side of the nose. 56-828 is also seen. Personnel of the 337th FIS took over in December. In March 1959 the F-104s were airlifted back home. 56-828 was supplied to the Taiwanese air force but this was apparently in 1960. Photo from: National Museum of the US Air Force

In February 1919 RAF DH.9s transported some essential supplies for the population of war-stricken Belgium. Aircraft Transport & Travel were somehow involved and D1197 wears small titles. The next five aircraft are D628, H4275, D1217, D1206 and D1214. All six were assigned to No 120 Sqn at Hawkinge, near Folkestone, tasked with mail and communication flights. A Dutch newspaper reported that the minor airlift was between Folkestone and Ghent. The aircraft codes might refer to the squadron's A and B flights. The farthest aircraft is coded A1. Corrigan had been refused permission make the transatlantic flight and was supposed to be attempting a non-stop flight to Long Beach, California. 28 hours later he landed at Baldonnel aerodrome near Dublin. He claimed he had mistakenly flown the reciprocal heading to that planned. The Robin is now at the Planes of Fame Museum, Chino. Photo by: Rudy Arnold / Smithsonian Institution

The O-46, which entered service in 1936, was overtaken by the need for observation aircraft to be nimble, small and able to use rudimentary airfields. The O-46 was a large, lumbering aircraft that would have been a sitting duck for fighters. A few were in the Philippines at the start of the Pacific war in 1941 but mostly they were US based with the Air National Guard or on mundane utility work.
