By 1981 this former Panagra DC-7 served as the "DC-7 Steak House" on the southwest corner of Georgia Highway 49 and Interstate 75 near Byron, GA. Its tail plane and the wings outboard the #2 and #3 engines were removed, but otherwise it was complete and in good condition. The aircraft carried no registration or titles, but still had "700" on the nosewheel doors. The facility stayed open for a few years only, and by 1988 it had fallen in disuse and the aircraft had become a derelict. It was broken up a short while later. In 1947(!) this B-17 was put up as an eye-catcher at Art Lacey's Bomber Gas & Restaurant on SE McLoughlin Boulevard in Milwaukie, OR, on the west side of Route 99E. Nearly 50 years later, in March 1996, the forward fuselage and the tail gun turret were removed for restoration, but the rest of the aircraft remained on display at the restaurant until also removed in December 2014. By 2023 the aircraft was still under restoration to flying condition by the B-17 Alliance Foundation in their hangar at McNary Field, Salem, OR. A regimented squadron by 1914 standards, but the Dorand Do1 seems to have served in very small numbers. Designed as a reconnaissance bomber with armour plates weighing 90 kg around the cockpits, the type was badly underpowered but saw some action early in the Great War. An uncamouflaged C-130B 'turns at the end of the short runway at Bam Bleh', taking US troops out after a bloody operation, Paul Revere IV, in the Plei Trap Valley. Searching for 'Bam Bleh' or 'Kbam Bleh' yielded no other information at all. This is assumed to be Landing Zone Oasis, southwest of Pleiku, which had a 3500-ft runway. An aerial photo shows four C-130s at LZ Oasis during this operation on 10 November. Photo from: US Air Force

Aircraft built to break world altitude record. After climbing free of other traffic, the pilot would lower himself into a pressurized compartment. Initially only capable of reaching 5000 m, F-AKFK was rebuilt in 1935 as the parasol wing F.1001. It crashed on 5 August 1935 after a window broke at altitude and pilot Marcel Cognot died. He had reached 34,000 ft according to the barograph on board. Photo from: Photo Bibliothèque nationale de France - Gallica

A massive Italian entry of six racing SM.79s and two Fiat BR.20s dominated the 1937 Istres - Damascus - Paris Air Race. I-CUPA was the winner. It was painted red with a green cheatline and the three green rats of the 'Sorci Verdi' flight on the fuselage. Although this airframe was also allocated MM358 and I-CUPA is not worn, these aircraft were nominally civilian. We think the single fasces emblem worn on the fuselage by Fascist Italian planes is not a military, but a state marking. I-CUPA re-registered I-MONI in January 1938 for a three-ship flight to Rio.
