Early He 111 fast airliner, one of a few delivered to DLH in 1936. In reference to the single-engined He 70 Blitz the type was called 'Doppel-Blitz'. Koolhoven FK.50 HB-AMO is visible in another shot, probably taken on the same day, thus dating the photos before 10 September 1937, the crash date of the FK-50. Photo from: ETH-Bibliothek Zürich

A biplane Fokker airliner? Yes and no - the substantial lower wing of the F.V (F.5) could be detached and it could be operated as a monoplane, although as such it looked dangerously incomplete. Only this example was built and it was tested for two weeks by the German-Russian airline Deruluft, carrying the Russian registration RR13. It became H-NABW in March 1924, and shortly thereafter it was exported to Austria. Photo from: ETH-Bibliothek Zürich

A razor sharp photograph of an early, Armstrong Siddeley Jaguar-powered D.XVI fighter. The markings are apparently Italian - it seems that 157 is an Italian MM serial number. The aircraft was not accepted by the Regia Aeronautica folllowing test flights. It arrived in Mukden (Shenyang) on 25 July 1931, shortly before the Mukden Incident. It was reportedly tested in Peking in August 1931. Photo from: ETH-Bibliothek Zürich

The C.VIII was designed as a three-seat strategic reconnaissance aircraft for the Dutch army, but rejected. Nine C.VIIIw floatplanes were ordered by the navy. G-1 was the first of these, delivered in 1930, and the photo was probably taken early on. The same aircraft was temporarily registered PH-AFQ and displayed at the 1930 Paris Air Show. 17 examples were built of the Bloch MB.220 airliner, which first flew in 1935. A few survivors were used by Air France for a couple of years after the war, with this one still wearing military roundels here. The resumption of commercial aviation in Europe. The USAAF C-47 - engines running - has perhaps just arrived to become Swissair's HB-IRF in May 1946 after conversion. The photographer was really shooting the C-47A on the right, PH-TBA, which flew KLM's first postwar Amsterdam to Zürich service that Monday. It is still camouflaged with the KLM logo on the rudder. The first FK.46 training and sport aircraft. The type had docile characeristics and was used succesfully in some numbers by the Dutch National Aviation School (NLS). The production aircraft were quite different from this wooden prototype. Photo from: ETH-Bibliothek Zürich

First flown in 1931, the four-seat FK.43 executive aircraft and air taxi was one of the more succesful Koolhoven types, with a dozen examples built plus another eight by Fokker after WWII. Nine of the original aircraft were used by KLM. This one was delivered to the airline in November 1933 and named Juffertje (damselfly). It crashed at Amsterdam on 18 December 1935.
