KLM's first own aircraft were Fokkers but four DH.9Bs were added in 1921. These converted bombers could carry two passengers. Researcher Herman Dekker notes that construction number H9187 is unconfirmed. The aircraft might be ex G-EAUQ (H9125) instead of G-EAUO (H9187). Photo from: Amsterdam City Archives

VH-UFF was originally delivered to the RAAF as A33-1 but was in service only a few months when Holyman's Airways asked to buy it to replace a crashed DH86. Holyman's had it for a year then it became ANA. In June 1938 -UFF was transferred to Airlines of Australia and was still with AOA when it was impressed by the RAAF as A33-3. During the war it was operated by Guinea Airways (as VH-UFF again). In 1956 it was sold in New Caledonia as F-OAVG. Photo from: State Library of Queensland

'Three seaplanes from De Mok air station landed on the Amstel River near the gasworks [former Zuidergasfabriek] this morning. It was not an emergency, the aeroplane pilots very calmly taxied to the Amstel Bridge before turning back. It was just a routine exercise. The F.III was a notable early airliner of which some 66 examples were built. Uniquely the pilot sat alongside the slightly offset engine, 'burning on one side and freezing on the other'. Used by then for sightseeing flights, this airframe was lost on 24 July 1928 here at Rotterdam when the pilot made too short a take-off run, hit a ship's masts and crashed into the Waalhaven harbour. One of the passengers drowned. Photo from: Amsterdam City Archives

September 1945, the RAF still calls the shots in Holland and throws a Battle of Britain Memorial event at Ypenburg. The Messenger has brought a two-star general by the looks of it. The fighters are Tempest Vs. Over 40 aircraft can be counted in the sky in another picture. Meteor jets also appeared. Photo from: Nationaal Archief (Netherlands)

In 1955 the Dutch bought 17 former US Navy PBM-5s for the defence of Netherlands New Guinea, which was claimed by Indonesia. The Mariner turned out to be a death trap - six of the large amphibians crashed with considerable loss of life. An Avenger is seen on the right here. The Jetliner was nearly the world's first true jet airliner, first flying on 10 August 1949 - only two weeks after the DH Comet. Its main drawback was the high fuel consumption of its four Derwent engines. Only this prototype was completed. Photo from: ETH-Bibliothek Zürich

Registered to D.G. Sims and Sons, Milton, Brisbane, who traded as Brisbane Aircraft and Automotive Engineering. G-AUEW was registered to Courier Aircraft in January 1927 with the plan to deliver newspapers by air. It was unsuccessful and the Avro was sold in Papua New Guinea in October 1927. Crashed into sea off Lae on December 18 that year. Restored to the register in October 1928 and withdrawn from use a year later. Photo from: State Library of Queensland
