This Vampire survives at the Comox Air Force Museum and apparently wears similar markings today. The C-124 in the background proves that this is an image from the 1950s when 17031 was No 442 Sqn's demonstration aircraft.

The last departure of the Hungarian Lockheed 8A Sirius. As NR115W Justice for Hungary, it had been flown across the Atlantic by György Endresz and navigator Sandór Magyar in July 1931. It became HA-AAF in Hungary. On 21 May 1932 Endresz and Gyula Bittay, who had replaced Magyar, went to Italy to attend the Congress of Transoceanic Airmen, but they lost their lives crashing the Sirius at Rome - Littorio (now Urbe). There was public mourning in Rome and Air Minister Italo Balbo, himself a transoceanic airman, presented Hungary with a rather less modern plane, the Fiat BR.3 HA-AAF Giustizia per l'Ungheria.

Also built as an airliner, the Ca.73 was the principal Italian bomber of the late 1920s. Like many Caproni designs, it was an inverted sesquiplane, with two engines installed in tandem. MM25010 was the first of a large batch of Ca.73ter aircraft, sometimes called Ca.82s. The second machine, MM25000, was the first of an early batch of nine. MM25000 was rebuilt to Ca.73bis standard under a January 1927 contract, with French Lorraine 12D instead of Isotta-Fraschini Asso 500 engines. Photo from: Dan Shumaker collection

The nearest aircraft has serial (MM)45175 painted at the base of the tailfin. The S.91 was a lightweight fighter design. First flown in December 1931, the S.91/7 was a new prototype with an inverted sesquiplane configuration. The aircraft achieved a record average speed of 309 km/u (192 mph) over a 500-km closed circuit on 2 June 1932. It seems the photo was taken at Saint-Germain-en-Laye, near Paris, that same week - Gerhard Fieseler, the posing pilot, performed at an airshow there on Sunday 5 June with his Fieseler F2 Tiger.

The sole Cruiser I, first flown in May 1932. Original designation 24M (Metal), as the wooden construction of the earlier Mailplane, G-ABLI, was changed to metal. The registered construction number makes no sense and should probably be 24M/1. Aircraft made European sales tour in October 1932. Used by Spartan Air Lines, Isle of Wight from April 1933. Sold to Commercial Air Hire, Croydon Airport, early in 1935. Ditched in The Channel on 11 May 1935 carrying a cargo of newspapers from Paris. Photo from: Dan Shumaker collection

The forerunner of the Spartan Cruiser was the Mailplane, designed by Edgar Percival and built by Saunders-Roe as the Saro A.24 Mailplane, but redesignated the Spartan Mailplane before its first flight on 1 June 1931. In 1932 the single tailfin was replaced by a twin unit. Two passenger seats and windows, still missing here, were added and the aircraft was named Blackpool for a flight to Karachi by Neville Stack in June 1932. G-ABLI reportedly scrapped in February 1933.

First flown in 1930, the Heinkel HD 42 was a seaplane trainer based on the old HD 24 and built initially for the covert military Deutsche Verkehrsfliegerschule (DVS). This is believed to be the third HD 42b, later redesignated as an He 42B (c/n 374 subject to confirmation). Markings indicate a 1934 or 1935 date. Location is likely Warnemünde.
