The US Navy acquired five COA-1 amphibians from the US Army. Receiving the OL-2 designation, they were intended for the 1925 MacMillan Arctic Expedition, with Richard Byrd leading an aviation element of three Loenings: NA-1, NA-2 and NA-3. NA-3 arrived at Squantum on 11 June 1925 and the photo is assumed taken that day. The pilot was Floyd Bennett. Byrd liked Bennett and put him in NA-1. The following year they headed for the North Pole together in a civilian Fokker F.VIIa-3m, Josephine Ford, which Byrd had coded BA-1. Photo by: Leslie Jones / Boston Public Library

Donald MacMillan (1874-1970), standing on the float, made over 30 expeditions to the Arctic. In 1931 he used this white and orange Vega on an air survey and photo expedition to Labrador and Greenland, sponsored by Multicolor film. Built as an L-1 Vega in 1929, the plane had first been used by an operator in Montana. After MacMillan it had many owners. In the 1960s it was used for movie work by Paul Mantz and Frank Tallman, and registered N965Y to play Amelia Earhart's Vega NC965Y. It is preserved in the Henry Ford museum in Dearborn. To our surprise the black S-55 in this nice photo is an early YH-19, one of two tested in Korea. Perhaps the helo is seen in its last hours, since Joe Baugher's website reports: 'With 3rd ARS, crash landed in mudflats near Inchon, South Korea May 2, 1952 after engine failed while returning from evacuation mission. All 3 crew survived and were rescued.' The helicopter did not survive. Photo from: National Archives at College Park, Maryland

One of the B-17s converted to airliners in Sweden, photographed perhaps in September 1945 - the photo was found among pictures of the American aircraft exhibition at Kastrup. Supposedly SE-BAN was only registered on 10 October 1945, but one source says 10 September 1945. The aircraft does not yet wear SILA Swedish Air Lines markings. Sister aircraft SE-BAK flew the first Stockholm - New York service in late June 1945. Photo from: Vejle Stadsarkiv

The Mojave was developed for the US Marines as the HR2S. This airframe was delivered in January 1957 and probably pictured that year. In 1962-63 it was on loan to the FAA's National Aviation Facilities Experimental Center as N475. Struck off charge in 1968. Photo from: National Archives at College Park, Maryland

August 1953 and kids are allowed to climb on this F-84C. The Boston Daily Globe of 8 August 1953 does not confirm there was an airshow, but does carry an article on the 102nd Fighter Interceptor Wing of the Massachusetts ANG, with a photo showing probably the same F-84. The unit had been 'stripped of jets' three years earlier, because these 'early model jets were lacking in performance' and 'difficult to service, too'. Wikipedia says the wing flew F-84Bs and then Mustangs again until they were replaced by the F-94 Starfire in 1954. Photo by: Edmund Mitchell / Boston Public Library

The first Santa Maria, MM45043, flew from Italy to New Orleans via Brazil but burnt in Arizona. This replacement aircraft was shipped to New York and headed north to Boston on 8 May 1927. But this was merely a test flight or a gesture to the Italian community in Boston. Afterwards, Francesco de Pinedo flew back south along the coast to New Orleans, and then to Chicago via the Mississippi, rather than via the US west coast as originally planned. Then he made it back to Europe via Newfoundland and the Azores. Photo by: Leslie Jones / Boston Public Library

The DT torpedo bomber won Douglas its first military contract, beating the Fokker FT (T.II). This photo is captioned 'Navy plane off USS Wright' and was perhaps taken in December 1927 when the seaplane tender Wright visited Boston. The last DT apparently served until 1928. Although designated Curtiss Scout, the CS was a scout and torpedo bomber designed by the US Navy's Bureau of Aeronautics. CS became SC in the Navy's post-1923 designation system. Only eight CS-1 and CS-2 aircraft, including A-6504, were built by Curtiss. 75 more SC-1s and SC-2s were built by Martin, and the design evolved into the Martin T3M. By mid-1927, the SC was only still in use with a training unit at NAS Pensacola. Photo by: Leslie Jones / Boston Public Library

The original designation of the OU observation aircraft was UO, with the letter U allocated to Vought. In the US Navy's post-1923 designation system the letters were reversed. Fitted out as a seaplane the type used a larger tailfin than as a landplane. Photo by: Leslie Jones / Boston Public Library

Second DC-3 in Chile, from 1946, ex 45-990. Not a paramilitary aircraft - the circular LAN logo was never the air force roundel. Photographed by the globetrotting Sophie Petersen probably in 1952 at 'Balmacedas'. Balmaceda was a stop on the Santiago - Punta Arenas route. We understand that the airfield was once called Leonor, but it is assumed to be the same location as modern SCBA. CC-CLL to CC-CLDH in 1957 and to CC-CBN in 1963. Withdrawn in 1976. Note that this is not construction number 26794/15349, which was CC-CLL in the 1990s. Photo by: Sophie Petersen / National Museum of Denmark

There were still few passenger airlines in America in 1928 and here mail on route CAM-1 from New York is delivered to Boston by a new PA-5 mailplane. CAM-1 was contracted to Colonial Air Transport, who apparently hired this aircraft. Pilot Ray Wonsey is known to have flown a Mailwing for Colonial around this time. NC3468 was registered to Phineas Millis, the owner of an airfield in Mendon, Massachusetts in 1928. Note logo of American Railway Express. This was a package delivery service like UPS or DHL, which did not operate aircraft itself. Photo by: Leslie Jones / Boston Public Library

This assault glider seems to be serial number 43-39705, which was towed to Sainte-Mère-Église by a C-47 on 7 June 1944. The fabric appears to be ripped near the roundel. On the right is a Fairchild UC-61K, almost certainly 43-14996. Photo from: Vejle Stadsarkiv

This was the first B-29 in Europe - as most viewers will know, the type was not used against the Germans. Coming straight from Goose Bay, it landed at Paris - Orly on 4 September 1945 to be put on display at an exhibition of US military power there, but oddly it is seen here at a similar show in Denmark which apparently opened only a few days later. The same Superfortress was also on view at Amsterdam - Schiphol in late October 1945. Photo from: Vejle Stadsarkiv
