It looks like these three four-engined Fokkers are identical but there was only one F.XXXVI (F.36, up to 36 passengers), and G-AFZP and G-AFXR, behind, are of the downsized F.XXII (F.22, 22 pax) variety. Having replaced them with DC-3s, KLM sold these three aircraft to Scottish Aviation at Prestwick in August 1939 for military service as navigation trainers, their unit becoming No 1 Air Observer and Navigation School on 1 November. The F.XXXVI crashed on 21 May 1940 on take-off from Prestwick. Military serial HM161 does not seem to be worn. Photo from: Imperial War Museums

Crashed during a test flight from Floyd Bennett Field on March 29, 1932, killing Captain Yoshinori Nagoya. The J-3 was a special long-range conversion of the CH-400 and this aircraft appears to have originally been c/n 632. The fuselage was deepened to provide more space for fuel. Nagoya was planning a non-stop flight from across the Pacific from Los Angeles to Tokyo. The rest of the crew for the proposed Pacific flight were not on the test flight. It seemed like a good idea - improving the aerodynamics of seaplanes by using a large central float or pontoon that could be retracted to conform with the fuselage. Built at the Blackburn seaplane factory in Dumbarton, the B-20 prototype V8914 first flew on 26 March 1940 but crashed on 7 April, probably due to aileron flutter. The project was then given up, although the concept had shown promise and was kept secret, making the B-20 one of the least-known British aircraft of the war. Photo from: Air Ministry (UK)
