An older generation of Airfix model builders might remember this aircraft was the decal set provided with the original 1960 Defiant kit. The actual aircraft was earmarked for conversion to a target tug by Reid and Sigrist but the work may not have been done before it was written off. Photo from: Imperial War Museums

This is the third Lancaster modified for carrying the bouncing dam-busting bomb designed by Barnes Wallis. It was to be the reserve aircraft for 617 Sqn's May 16/17, 1943, raid but was used, flown by American-born RCAF pilot Joe McCarthy against the Sorpe Dam. Hit the target but the dam was not breached. ED825 was shot down on December 10, 1943 while on a mission over France to drop agents. All the crew were killed. McCarthy had been moved to another squadron by then. Highly decorated, he survived the war and died in 1998. Photo from: Imperial War Museums

Blackburn was contracted to build two transports, one a biplane and one a monoplane, that would be otherwise identical. It was to test the relative merits of the configurations. The monoplane proved superior and G-ABKW was scrapped. It did provide spares for the monoplane, G-ABKV, which was sent to the Royal Aircraft Establishment for use in trials and experiments. 489 Sqn was a RNZAF unit under the command of the RAF. It was attached to Coastal Command. The Hampdens were replaced by Beaufighters in 1943. After VE Day, 489 started converting to Mosquitos ahead of being deployed to the Pacific. With Japan's surrender, this did not happen and the squadron was disbanded. Photo from: Imperial War Museums

Early production Albemarle. This photo is sometimes dated March 6, 1942 but the IWM caption says was taken after assembly by AW Hawksey at the factory aerodrome (known as Hucclecote at the time). 13 Albemarles had flown by the end of the 1941 and P1372 was the 13th Albemarle. The date might be the date the photo was received by the records office. Following trials with the Aeroplane and Armament Experimental Establishment, P1372 served with No. 511 Squadron RAF and No. 42 Operational Training Unit. Photo from: Imperial War Museums
