This was a Hurricane converted for catapult launch off merchant ships. These aircraft were essentially disposable and would ditch in the sea when fuel was low. Whether this happened to Z4852 is unclear. It is shown as lost at sea in February 1942 but it had a career after that date as confirmed by the photo. It finished with a training unit. BP888 at the conclusion of its operational service with No. 543 Squadron RAF. The aircraft was flown to the Aeroplane and Armament Experimental Establishment at Boscombe Down, and subsequently passed to No. 8 Operational Training Unit, at Dyce, Aberdeen.
