Liquidated in 2019, Aigle Azur dated back to 1946 and acquired TWA's Boeing Stratoliner fleet in 1951. Formerly NC19905, F-BCEV still wears TWA fleet number 400. It appears the picture was taken during the 1955 Paris Air Show. The aircraft left for the Far East a few months later. It mysteriously disappeared over North Vietnam on 18 October 1964. Clearly an advertising shoot with daisy-fresh 'overnight passengers' disembarking from a TWA 'Luxury Sky-Sleeper'. Although the 'widebody' DC-3 was expensively redesigned from the DC-2 as a sleeper plane, it never became popular as such. TWA's DC-3B already had a smaller, convertible sleeper cabin, with fewer upper windows than the original DST. NC17312 was commandeered by the USAAF as a C-84, but returned to TWA in 1943. The bizarre XB-51 trijet was only a light bomber, originally designated XA-45. The USAF instead bought the Canberra, also built by Martin as the B-57. This was the first of two XB-51s, first flown on 28 October 1949. There was an air-to-air photo session on 14 November 1949. There was a bullet fairing around the T-tail joint by late February 1950. 46-685 later starred in the movie Toward the Unknown as a 'Gilbert XF-120'. Photo from: National Museum of the US Air Force

The H-16 was the world's largest helicopter when first flown on 23 October 1953. The second and last example, seen here, was modified to turbine power and first flew as the YH-16A in June 1955, but crashed on 5 January 1956. The US Air Force and Army judged the type unsuitable for operational use. Photo from: Piasecki

Lufthansa named many of its aircraft after German WWI aces, including Olivier von Beaulieu-Marconnay. Built in 1934, D-AMIT went to Lufthansa Peru in 1938 and was confiscated by the Peruvian government in 1941. The two DC-3s were delivered in the summer of 1937. KLM's PH-ALP Pelikaan ended up with KNILM in the East Indies as PK-AFV and was shot down by Zeros near Broome on 3 March 1942. SE-BAB Höken was renamed Bele Viking when AB Aerotransport was absorbed by SAS, and served until 1957. Photo from: Amsterdam City Archives

Rejected as a maritime patrol aircraft, the XP5Y turboprop flying boat was reworked as the R3Y Tradewind transport and tanker aircraft, the R3Y-2 having forward doors for use as a flying landing craft. During this demonstration on 27 April 1957, the sixth Tradewind landed a bunch of marines, a jeep, a light truck, a Mule tractor and a howitzer. However, even in a quiet bay, it was very difficult to keep the aircraft stable or to reverse from the beach, and the navy was not impressed. Photo from: Nederlands Instituut voor Militaire Historie

The LeO H-198 was a catapult-capable version of the H-19 flying boat airliner, intended for a transatlantic air mail scheme. F-AIQP made a forced landing off the Scilly Islands on 13 September 1928 and was reportedly written off, but re-registered to Air Union in April 1929, and here it is seen in China. Photo is dated 1928 but that seems unlikely. Photo from: ETH-Bibliothek Zürich
