The Dantorp was a three-seat variant of the Hawker Horsley. Two examples were delivered to the Danish navy and used extensively with wheels and floats. Torpedo bombing was found to be difficult and anyway, licenced construction of ten more aircraft here at the Orlogsværftet naval yard did not go ahead. The official service designation was HB.III. 202 is hoisted on board here by the fishery protection ship Ingolf. Photo from: National Museum of Denmark

DC-2s 'U.S. 9', formerly NC13723, and NC14966 (c/n 1406) on the Pan Am ferry route to Africa, on delivery to the RAF. The Americas were not yet at war with Germany and this was a sensitive issue - the 'US' markings were apparently sometimes applied to please Brazil. NC14966 became AX768 and NC14966 became HK821, both with 117 Sqn in Khartoum. 'U.S. 9' is a DC-2-112 while NC14966 parked behind is a DC-2-120 with enlarged tailfin, right hand door and landing lights moved from nose to wings. Photo by: Hart Preston / Life

Serial 459 was first given to a Norwegian Hawk 75A-6 which was captured by the Germans and sold to Finland. This airframe however is one of thirty Hawk 75A-8s used as trainers in Canada. The survivors were later supplied to Peru as P-36Gs. The photographer, Conrad Mohr, escaped Norway to Sweden in 1941 and reached Canada after an incredible journey. He was killed in a Hawk 75 training accident in February 1943. See photo 353189 for his picture. Photo by: Conrad Mohr / Arkivverket (Norway)

With her friend Suzanne Tillier, behind the wing, as her mechanic, French aviatrix Maryse Bastié flew from Paris into the Soviet Union as far as Irkutsk and back in a state-owned Caudron Simoun. Tracing it origins back to the British Nieuport Nighthawk fighter, the Grouse sesquiplane led to the Grebe fighter. The sole Grouse, G-EAYN, was converted to a two-seat trainer and sold to Sweden in December 1925 where it was designated Ö3 as an 'exercise' (advanced trainer) type aircraft. It was withdrawn from use in 1929. Photo by: Karl Johan Stenhardt / Östergötlands Museum

Before acquiring any helicopters of their own, the Swedish armed forces held extensive trials with Ostermans Aero's Bell 47s and S-55s - fortunately for the company which had lost a lot of money using the two S-55s on a Malmö - Copenhagen passenger shuttle service in June and July 1955.
