The Americas were not yet at war with Germany and this was a sensitive issue - the 'US' markings were apparently sometimes applied to please Brazil. NC14966 became AX768 and NC14966 became HK821, both with 117 Sqn in Khartoum. Serial 459 was first given to a Norwegian Hawk 75A-6 which was captured by the Germans and sold to Finland. This airframe however is one of thirty Hawk 75A-8s used as trainers in Canada. The survivors were later supplied to Peru as P-36Gs. The photographer, Conrad Mohr, escaped Norway to Sweden in 1941 and reached Canada after an incredible journey. With her friend Suzanne Tillier, behind the wing, as her mechanic, French aviatrix Maryse Bastié flew from Paris into the Soviet Union as far as Irkutsk and back in a state-owned Caudron Simoun. Note the large fuel tank in the cabin. The tailfin clearly shows construction number 7369 for this aircraft, F-AQAY. The reconstructed French register gives 7402, and 7369 for F-AQAX.
