A February 1932 article in Time magazine makes clear the original Air Ferries company in the San Francisco Bay area only operated until the fall of 1931. Walter Varney gave it another try, flying between the 'landing button' at Pier 5 in San Francisco and the Bay Airdrome in Alameda. The 'big' Loening C-2 was replaced by the Sikorsky S-39, a single-engined derivative of the S-38. The fare was reduced to $1, but the air service ceased again in August 1933, several years before the opening of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge which is blamed for its demise. B-36A at the 1948 Air Age Exhibition. A McDonnell XF-85 Goblin parasite fighter, built here at Lambert Field, is displayed with the bomber but note that the XF-85 was probably never actually carried by a B-36. Three days earlier on 14 October 1948, test pilot Edwin Schoch had managed the first successful hook-up with a B-29 over Muroc Dry Lake in the second XF-85 airframe. This Goblin may therefore be assumed to be the first, 46-523, repaired after falling from a crane during wind tunnel testing at Moffett Field. Photo from: McDonnell

H-NABS (c/ n 1531) did not enter service with KLM but was sold to the Deutsche Luft-Reederei/Danziger Luft-Reederei along with H-NABR (c/n 1530), which may be the plane on the ground below the chimney. H-NABS (c/n 1531) to FD-21 and Dz-8 in the Free City of Danzig register. The transfers already took place in 1920 according to some sources but this is ruled out by Dutch register information. Also , the F.III did not fly until 20 November 1920. Wrzeszc was Langfuhr in German. The airport closed in 1974. Remains are still clearly visible in the Zaspa district of Gdánsk. The Dutch Naval Air Service received 24 TBM-3W2 Avengers, equipped with APS-20 radar, from 1953. 16-104 and 16-108 are formally P-104 and P-108, the aircraft type letter P being the 16th letter in the alphabet. This serial presentation denoted naval aircraft. In a new serial system introduced in 1959, these two airframes became 046 and 048 respectively but they were scrapped in the following year. Built for transatlantic flight by Laura Ingalls but Amelia Earhart became the first female to solo across the Atlantic instead in 1932. Ingalls then flew the aircraft around South America and over the Andes in 1934. It was NR974Y then and had the cabin windows faired over. It passed to other operators and is reported destroyed in a wind storm in Nevada in 1942. Ingalls, meanwhile, had developed outspoken Nazi sympathies and was arrested as a German agent. Air Ferries started flying between Pier 5 in San Francisco and Jack London Square in Oakland in 1930. The fare was $1.50. Running every 15 minutes, the service carried carrying 21,000 passengers in its first two months and was portrayed as successful, but was suspended apparently in the autumn of 1931, with Varney subsidiary Varney Air Ferries then having another try until August 1933.
