Air Ferries started flying between Pier 5 in San Francisco and Jack London Square in Oakland in 1930. The fare was $1.50. Running every 15 minutes, the service carried carrying 21,000 passengers in its first two months and was portrayed as successful, but was suspended apparently in the autumn of 1931, with Varney subsidiary Varney Air Ferries then having another try until August 1933.
