Beautiful photo of Thor Solberg's arrival at the Widerøe seaplane station near Oslo following his transatlantic flight, which took almost a month via Labrador, Greenland, Iceland and the Faroe Islands. Named for the Norse seafarer Leif Erikson, this Loening flew from America to Norway via Labrador, Greenland, Iceland and the Faroes. Photo must have been taken on 17 July 1935, the day Thor Solberg and Paul Oscanyan set out from New York. Solberg returned as he felt the plane was wrongly loaded and they took off again without any publicity the next day. They finally arrived in Bergen on 16 August. Solberg seems to have believed they were the first to fly from America to Norway, but Jimmie Mattern had flown, unintentionally but non-stop, from New York to Norway in 1933 in his second Lockheed Vega NR869E. On July 18, 1935, Thor Solberg and Paul C. Oscanyan left Floyd-Bennett Field for Norway with NC10239 passing through Labrador, Greenland, Iceland, the Faroe Islands, and arriving in Bergen, Norway 16 August. The Air Yacht is now on display at Norsk Teknisk Museum in Oslo.

Any self-respecting US millionaire owned an 'air yacht', but the C-2 Air Yacht was sometimes used as an airliner, Western Air Express flying it between LA and Catalina Island. Air Ferries started flying between Pier 5 in San Francisco and Jack London Square in Oakland in 1930. The fare was $1.50. Running every 15 minutes, the service carried carrying 21,000 passengers in its first two months and was portrayed as successful, but was suspended apparently in the autumn of 1931, with Varney subsidiary Varney Air Ferries then having another try until August 1933.
