The Oxford trainer was developed from the Envoy light transport and Airspeed successfully converted surplus Oxfords to similar standards as Consuls after the war. Ex LX599, this one wears a Monaco registration and Monte Carlo Airways titles on the nose, but was never delivered to this company. It became G-AJAX instead and ended up in Israel. Photo from: Flight

Aircraft of Air Service Training. The second row of Oxfords are G-AIAT, G-AITB and G-ALTR. The Austers include G-AMUI, built in 1952, and G-AXKR, sold to Vendair of Croydon in 1957 and to Sweden in 1958. Helicopter training was advertised by AST as a new addition in 1955 but I don't know when the first Hillers arrived.

One of three Oxfords allocated by the RAAF to the USAAF at Townsville. The others were VHCOA and VHCOB however VHCOC is most likely. It had been BM740 in RAAF service, which had retained its RAF serial. The registrations were call signs used by transport aircraft in the South-West Pacific theatre and not civil registrations. They did not have hyphens. VHCOC was returned to the RAAF. Photo from: Townsville City Library

Built for the RAF as V3388 in 1940 and flown by Boulton-Paul as the company hack G-AHTW from 1946 until 1963. Painted back into military marks V3388 at Elstree, it was delivered to the Skyfame Museum at Staverton in early 1964 and remained there until the museums closure in 1978. Subsequently moved to Duxford where it remains at time of upload. The civil registration was cancelled in April 1989.

Not repaired after this accident. RNZAF Eyreton was also known as Harris Field. While some sites say the aerodrome was never built this accident was not the only one at Harris Field during World War II. The marker behind shows that on this day at least a runway was marked out. Eyreton may have functioned as a landing ground for student pilots but not otherwise used. Photo from: RNZAF/Air Force Museum of New Zealand
