This photograph was taken at Nyutabaru Air Base on June 25, 2001, and shows the 301Sq's F4EJ Kai No. 404. This is a close-up of the left nose of an aircraft that took part in the 2001 Combat Tactics Competition. The shark mouth on the nose has been painted in a three-dimensional way. The colour of the shark's eyes on this aircraft was red. There are two stars on the left air intake vane, so it appears to have been made into the squadron leader's aircraft. JASDF fighter pilots do not normally have a designated aircraft. The commanding officer of a participating unit is only assigned a plane during the tactical and combat competitions.

Built as a F-4E-44-MC by McDonnell Douglas at Saint Louis in 1970, 69-7263 was first assigned to the 4th TFW, Seymour Johnson AFB, NC. In 1972/73 it was deployed to Ubon RTAFB and in 1977 it was one of 116 undergoing conversion to F-4G Wild Weasel configuration with electronics to seek out SAM air defence radars. It then served various units at Nellis AFB, George AFB and Spangdahlem in Germany. Deployed to Bahrain with the 35th TFW in early 1991, it launched over 40 missiles during Desert Storm before transfer in 1992 to the 190th TFS/124th FG Idaho ANG at Boise. It joined the USAFM in 1996

This F4EJ Kai of 302SQ belonging to Naha Air Base was photographed at JASDF Nyutabaru Air Base on the 26th of October 2006. This aircraft is painted in the livery required for the JASDF Combat Skills Competition held in 2006. On the nose is painted the face of a shisa (lion), a guardian deity that has been passed down since ancient times on Okinawa Island, where Naha Air Base is located.

On October 12, 2013, a ceremony was held at Nyutabaru Air Base to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the 301st SQ. On this day, four F4EJ Kai aircraft, including one with a special commemorative livery（No.398）, performed a celebratory flight. This is a low, high-speed takeoff by the second livery aircraft to participate in the JASDF combat competition, No. 440. (This year's JASDF combat competition was held at the end of September 2013.) This aircraft is the 5,195th F-4 Phantom, the last to be built in the world.

Also, the color of the shark's eyes is red. The color of these eyes was different for each participating aircraft.

At the end of September 2013, the Air Defense Command's Air Combat Skills Competition was held at Hyakuri Air Base. When I visited Nyutabaru Air Base on September 10, 2013, the F4EJ Kai of the 301st SQ were training hard in preparation for the competition. On that day, there were two F4EJ Kai (No. 436 and No. 440) with special paintwork for the competition.

This is an RF-4EJ of 501SQ belonging to Hyakuri Base, photographed at JASDF Nyutabaru Base on November 12, 2004. The RF-4EJ is an aircraft that was created by modifying an F-4EJ fighter aircraft into a reconnaissance type. Modification development work began in 1990, and the first flight was on February 4, 1992. The difference with the RF-4E is that, as a modified fighter aircraft, it retained the 20mm Vulcan cannon and air-to-air missile capabilities mounted on the nose. This is F4EJ No. 428 of 301SQ, photographed at Nyutabaru Air Base on January 9, 1986. Around 1984, the silhouette of a hypothetical enemy aircraft, the MiG-21 Fishbed, was painted on the entire fuselage of this aircraft. This aircraft was used as an enemy aircraft in aerial exercises and as a tow aircraft for dart targets.

This is a close-up of the right side of the nose of an F4EJ kai of 301st SQ, based at Nyuutabaru Base, participating in the 2001 JASDF combat competition. The aircraft was painted to boost morale. The shark's teeth were depicted in three dimensions. Also, the eye colors of each participating aircraft were painted differently, such as "red," "green," or "yellow," depending on the aircraft.

For pre-training purposes prior to the JASDF Combat Skills Competition in the summer of 1992, the 301st SQ, based at Nyutabaru Air Base, painted two F4EJ Kai aircraft in the enemy's faker paint scheme. The paintwork on these aircraft is a faithful reproduction of the forest camouflage paintwork of the enemy's F1 fighter ground attack aircraft.

In the fall of 1986, JASDF encouraged each fighter unit to test low-vis paint on their aircraft. Three F4EJs from 304th SQ at Tsuiki Air Base were given this low-vis paint job, including this one. The nationality markings, unit markings, and serial numbers of each aircraft were made smaller, and then oversprayed. Incidentally, the 342nd aircraft still had the camouflage paint job it had when it participated in the 1984 JASDF Combat Skills Competition.

Prior to the 1995 JASDF Combat Skills Competition, the F4EJ Kai aircraft belonging to the 301st Squadron at Nyutabau Air Base were painted to boost morale. The air intake splitter vane of this No. 384 aircraft bears the scorpion mark that shot down the UF104J.
