This photograph was taken at Nyutabaru Air Base on June 25, 2001, and shows the 301Sq's F4EJ Kai No. 404. This is a close-up of the left nose of an aircraft that took part in the 2001 Combat Tactics Competition. The shark mouth on the nose has been painted in a three-dimensional way. The colour of the shark's eyes on this aircraft was red. There are two stars on the left air intake vane, so it appears to have been made into the squadron leader's aircraft. JASDF fighter pilots do not normally have a designated aircraft. The commanding officer of a participating unit is only assigned a plane during the tactical and combat competitions.

This is F4EJ Kai No. 404 of 301Sq, photographed at JASDF Nyutabaru Base on 2001.06.25. This aircraft participated in the 2001 JASDF combat competition. There are two stars on the air intake splitter vane, so it is the team's captain aircraft. The shark mouth on the nose is painted in a three-dimensional way. Also, the color of the shark's eyes is red. The color of these eyes was different for each participating aircraft.

Since 2020, this Phantom has been preserved at the gate of Komatsu AB.

Delivered in 1978, converted to Kai standard in the early '90s and preserved at Komatsu in 2020.

Even with the "barn doors" extended, the Phantom's delta wing requires a very nose-high attitude on landing. The aircraft is wet from the rain, except for part of the rear fuselage that is kept dry by engine heat.
