Around this time, the official livery of the JASDF F4EJ was changed. As a result, formation takeoffs of F4EJ Kais with both the old and new official liveries were often seen at Nyutabaru Air Base. The livery change of this aircraft was done during a regular aircraft maintenance (Inspection and Repairing As Necessary).

For pre-training purposes prior to the JASDF Combat Skills Competition in the summer of 1992, the 301st SQ, based at Nyutabaru Air Base, painted two F4EJ Kai aircraft in the enemy's faker paint scheme. The paintwork on these aircraft is a faithful reproduction of the forest camouflage paintwork of the enemy's F1 fighter ground attack aircraft.
