Around March 1992, seven F4EJ Kai of 301SQ belonging to Nyutabaru Air Base were given dark blue and light blue identification bands on the upper part of the fuselage.The F4EJ Kai given the blue identification band were No. 342, No. 345, No. 401 and No. 402.The F4EJ Kai given the dark blue identification band were No. 338, No. 348, and No. 437.

This is an F4EJ Kai of the 301st SQ based at Nyutabaru Air Base, painted for the 1992 JASDF Combat Skills Competition, with six aircraft given special paint jobs. The camouflage paintwork on these 301SQ aircraft was a gray cloud pattern to accommodate the cloudy airspace, as the JASDF Combat Skill Competition was held during Japan's long rainy season. The cloud pattern air superiority camouflage on each aircraft varied in its paint pattern. The first to be painted, and the one that was most faithful to the original pattern, was No. 437.

In the fall of 1986, JASDF encouraged each fighter unit to test low-vis paint on their aircraft. Three F4EJs from 304th SQ at Tsuiki Air Base were given this low-vis paint job, including this one. The nationality markings, unit markings, and serial numbers of each aircraft were made smaller, and then oversprayed. Incidentally, the 342nd aircraft still had the camouflage paint job it had when it participated in the 1984 JASDF Combat Skills Competition.

As hinted by the first digit in its serial, 1974 was the year this Phantom was delivered, as an F-4EJ. Conversion to Kai standard took place in 1991 and in October 2010, it was put into storage at Hyakuri. Alive and kicking here, one year earlier.

Ready for departure once again. On this rainy day, the engines have dried the aft fuselage skin from within with their heat. The exhaust did the same from the outside, to the forward halve of the tail.
