The final Giant Moth airframe was not taken up by London Air Transport in Canada as G-CARD, but is believed to have been rebuilt as CF-OAK with a P&W Hornet engine. 'Hit rock on landing, Gander Lake, Ontario, 23 May 1935' - it was then a seaplane. Photo from: Hawker Siddeley

Probably belonging to No 71 Sqn, the jet was on its way from Gütersloh to Britain when the pilot had to make an emergency landing on Highway 43 - today's A7 - between Bolsward and Sneek, Friesland province. He steered into a ditch to avoid running into a car. VZ325 was repaired, and fatally crashed in 1955 when it dived into the ground near Aberdeen. It would have been a rare event for an RAAF Convair to cross the "ditch", as the Tasman Sea is known, to New Zealand. It is more than 2000km with only one island airport in between. Almost 20 years after this photo, an engine failure on an RAAF BAC 1-11 on a Tasman flight saw then prime minister Whitlam insist on four-engine VIP aircraft for all his international travel. The RAAF acquired a fleet of used 707s, some of which were also used as tankers. The RAAF VIP fleet in 2025 is all twins. Photo from: Air Force Museum of New Zealand

NZ4013 sunk while under tow after it water-looped taking off from the Segond Channel during a rescue mission on October 11, 1944. The museum says the location of this photo is Emirau Island but there is no specific reference to a flying boat base there. The full photo does show a slipway. There was an airfield complex on the island that was used by the RNZAF. The island was captured from the Japanese in March 1944. Photo from: Air Force Museum of New Zealand

This airframe was allocated G-AFYH in 1940 but it spent the war in Royal Navy service as BT312. Repaired by Southern Aircraft and then sold to British Air Transport for charter flights in a 15-pax configuration. It was flown a couple of times more during 1952 in an unsuccessful attempt to sell it; photo print dated 28 May 1952. The last remaining Flamingo, it was scrapped in 1954. Photo from: Hawker Siddeley

The registration leads one to believe that this was the first Dutch DC-3, but PH-ALI had a lower construction number and was delivered almost six months earlier. PH-ALH captured by the Germans. Used by Lufthansa as D-ABUG and by KG 200 of the Luftwaffe into 1944. Photo from: Amsterdam City Archives

Ex G-ACWJ. Privately owned but tested by the Dutch army during an exercise on 7 July 1936. Pilot Lt Hein Schmidt-Crans crashed at Soesterberg that afternoon, suffering a downdraft and hitting two busses filled with children. No one was hurt but the autogyro was 'crushed'. Registration cancelled in January 1938. Wreck returned to Cierva at Hanworth in 1938. Impressed as AP508 in June 1940 for radar calibration work. Ditched off Seaton by P/O Raymond Pullin on 16 April 1941. Photo from: Nederlands Instituut voor Militaire Historie

C-47s seemed to ignore the Iron Curtain. Ex 43-15073, OK-XDM served with ČSA from 1946 until 1960. It was sold to France, then to Yugoslavia and is on display at Merville, Normandy since 2007. Note: ex Panagra DC-3 N18119 (c/n 1995) was on display as "OK-XDM" for some time. In the foreground is a LOT Polish Airlines C-47A, SP-LCE, ex 42-100826 (c/n 19289). This one ended up in Iran. LHBP airport was dedicated in 1950. The concrete control tower was apparently thought to be pretty as there were two of them, for reasons of symmetry only. Photo from: Fortepan
