Slide taken in the outdoor aircraft display area at the old museum on Patterson AFB. At this time the a/c still wore its correct serial number. It was acquired by the USAFM in 1965 from Air France, where it was used in their training school near Paris. This is a combat veteran, having seen action with the Free French Air Force during the last months of WW 2.

This was the second of three X-15 a/c. After a mishap, it was rebuilt into an improved version. This included external propellant tanks for longer burn time and a slightly longer fuselage. In October 1967, being flown by Pete Knight, this X-15 set a speed record of Mach 6.7 (4,520 miles per hour) which still stands today. Transferred to the museum in 1969 after the X-15 program ended.

Built as VC-54C USAAF s/n 42-107451. This was the first a/c outfitted for presidential use. It was used once by Franklin Roosevelt, that being his flight to Yalta and back in 1945. On that flight it was marked with a false serial number on the vertical fin. The a/c has been restored to the markings for that flight. Later used by President Harry Truman from 1945 through 1947 when it was replaced by a VC-118. This photo was taken in the old presidential a/c hangar (the a/c were wedged in, not good for photography!). Now on display in the new Presidential Gallery in the main museum.

This T-39A was used by former president Lyndon Johnson from August 1968 through January 1973. It was based at Bergstrom AFB not far from his ranch. It had a special VIP interior for six passengers and three crew. After President Johnson died in 1973 the a/c continued to be used for high level government travel. Transferred to the museum in October 1984. It is on display in the Presidential Aircraft Gallery.

The second of five XH-26 helicopters built. Powered by an American Helicopter XJ49-AH-3 pulsejet on each rotor tip (red cylinder on right side of photo) each producing 35 lbs. of thrust. It performed well but was very noisy and the blade tip motor location precluded engine out autorotations. It was not put into production.

This U-4B was used by President Dwight Eisenhower from 1956 - 1960 for flights from Washington, D.C. to his farm in Gettysburg, VA. From 1961 - 1969 it was used by high ranking government officials for shorter flights. Transferred to the USAF Academy in 1969 and used by the skydiving team through 1977. After a short stint in storage at Tucson, it was assigned to the Nebraska Civil Air Patrol. It was acquired by the museum in 1996 from a private owner and put on display. It is currently in the Presidential Aircraft Gallery.
