This is presumably Tenerife in 1953 according to the Norwegian source. The Dakota is ex 42-93461, KG616, G-AJAY. To T.3-67 in the Spanish air force. Its fate is uncertain - according to some researchers, this one may have become ECT-025 which took off for Germany on 3 October 1980 and disappeared without trace. Photo from: Norsk Folkemuseum

'Many people in uniform have gathered for a jet fighter breaking the sound barrier.' Elsewhere we found that this was about the arrival of officially the first Norwegian F-86K on 12 September 1955. USAF Capt Ray Renfro flew a display the next day. Deliveries - through Short - had really begun on 9 September. Apparently the telex printer in the Short Brothers office in Belfast was not the best: the squadron code of 337 Skv was ZK, but Shorts had painted ZX first - and then 'corrected' this to 2X! Owned by Irene Dean-Williams, the first woman to own an aircraft in Western Australia. Photo taken when she was on her way from Perth to Sydney ahead of a successful Sydney-Perth record attempt. Berlei, which made women's undergarments, was the sponsor. VH-UJH was later impressed into the RAAF as A7-77 in 1939. Tedcastle's Paddock served as an aerodrome for Wagga Wagga even after an official aerodrome was opened. Its inadequacies were the reason the air pageant was held at Tedcastle's Paddock. On 18 September 1946, Sabena DC-4 OO-CBG crashed 35 km (22 miles) southwest of Gander on a transatlantic proving flight. Two USCG helicopters, a HOS-1 and this HNS-1, were airlifted to Gander, reassembled and test-flown within 48 hours. The helicopters took survivors from the crash site to the shore of Gander Lake where they were transferred to a PBY Catalina, 48314. 051 is BuNo 39051, originally commissioned as an R-4B, 43-46586. We gather this rescue flying boat type - with beaching gear - was conceived as the Atlantic Fokker (A)F-15 to become the General Aviation GA-15. The USCG called it the Flying Life Boat (FLB). Later this designation was changed to PJ in the US Navy system. This was the first of five airframes built, first flown in 1931 and delivered in January 1932. In 1933 this one was rebuilt to PJ-2 standard with tractor propellers. USCG serial number changed from 51 to 251 and then to V116. Named Antares. V116 reportedly withdrawn in 1940. The Atlantic Fokker company became the General Aviation division of GM - later North American. Its (A)F-15 became the GA-15, designated FLB (Flying Life Boat) by the USCG and then PJ in the US Navy designation system. Five machines built from 1931, the first of which was converted to tractor propulsion as the PJ-2. USCG s/n 254 Amacar, s/n 255 Arcturus and the Douglas RD-1 Dolphin s/n 128 Sirius were based at Dinner Key in 1934. Photo from: US Coast Guard

Coast Guard serial 131 changed to V126 in 1936. USCG aircraft were named after stars, such as Mizar, in this period. This RD-4 was still in service on 5 August 1941 when it struck a jutting rock near the Farallon Islands, off San Francisco. Three crew all killed. Photo from: US Coast Guard

'Pan American's new high-altitude fleet. Ready for 'top flight' to Rio and San Cristobal [Cristóbal, Panama]: the Comet [NC19910], the Rainbow [NC19902] and the Flying Cloud [centre] at Miami.' This was Pan Am's entire 'Strato-Clipper' fleet. Location assumed to be Municipal Airport (later Amelia Earhart Field) which the 307s had to use until the runways at Pan Am's 36th Street Airport (now MIA) were lengthened. Data for the second aircraft, which can be identified. 29479 was a J29B converted to E in 1955, and to F in 1958. These Tunnan fighters are J29Fs according to Saab. The squadron colour is probably red; however, we found that 29479 was 'blue T' early in its career. Photo from: Saab
