This was an experimental design for a STOL replacement for the C130. Two examples were built, this being the second. Whilst production was never instigated the project lead to the development of the much larger C-17 a fact very evident when seen from this angle.

This unmarked Chickasaw at the Milestones of Flight Air Museum is usually quoted as 55-4943, but this is almost certainly not correct. That serial is quoted on a modification data plate in the cabin, but the fuselage main data plate quotes serial 53-4441. The latter is usually considered to be the most relevant and most reliable plate. Following the museum's closure in Jun 2015, this helicopter was moved to the Estrella Warbirds Museum in Paso Robles, CA in late 2015.

The Milestones of Flight Museum was formed by Lee Embree in the early 1970s, then named the Antelope Valley Air Museum. In 1986 the name was changed to Milestones of Flight Museum. This C-97 has been part of the collection since at least 1988. The museum closed in 2015, and although the exhibits were sold for restoration or offered for scrap value, this C-97 was still present by Mar 2018, as were the Argosy and the C-119.

The 153rd Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron was part of the Mississippi Air National Guard and based at Key Field ANGB. The squadron is currently equipped with KC-135 Stratotankers, but in the old days - after the prop era - it flew jets like the RF-80 Shooting Star, RF-84F Thunderflash, RF-101C Voodoo and these nice RF-4C Phantoms IIs. This 418 was temporary based at Bergstrom and a nice change to the massive number of photographed BA-coded Recce Phantoms that day.

Two visitors on the opposite of the runway of Bergstrom AFB (TX). The Texan megabase, housed a massive number of RF-4Cs and F-4Ds those days and was often visited by USAF aircraft that flew cross country and/or navigation missions through the USA. Likewise these two Fighting Falcons, originating from Hill AFB (UT). The aircraft marked "12 AF" carries serial 82-0916/HL (construction number 61-509).
