The well-known NAF Mildenhall Super Dak at the annual Open House. On 21.11.73 the aircraft encountered severe icing over Iceland during a local supply flight, making it impossible to maintain height, so the crew elected to make a forced landing on a frozen river. The ice broke but 171 stayed afloat. After recovery the remains were abandoned and are still there topped by ice and snow

This early Phantom (original designation F4H-1F) set a low-altitude speed record, still unbeaten, on 28.8.61, when Lts Huntington Hardisty (pilot) and Earl De Esch (RIO) flew her at 903 mph over a 3 km low-altitude course at the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. Here, this VS-71 Tracker has remained mercifully free of the dreaded Spraylat. She was one of those with a new career ahead. Having arrived at DM in 12.74, she went on to the Venezuelan Navy in 5.81 as AS-108, the last of eight supplied (6 in 1975, 2 in 1981). The 'RZ' tail code was that of VR-21 based at Barber's Point NAS, HI. Aircraft arrived at MASDC in 10.76 and registered N810CS in 1990; eventually ferried to Fairbanks AK by Everts Air Fuel in 5.99 and placed in store where she remains in ex-USN marks

There are plenty of images on the internet of an F-4 in the Speyer museum pretending to be 153072, but this is the real Blue Angels ship #1 and was only the second production F-4J. Written off in a collision with 153081 (ship #4) at NAS Lakehurst, NJ on 26.7.73 - just two months after this photo - during a practice session

Ah, the colourful days of the USN... the last USN Tracker squadron, VS-37, was disestablished in 1976 when the S-3A Viking took over the ASW role. 152806 was one of their aircraft and arrived at MASDC in 2.75 and seemingly has since been broken up like so many others
