A truly incredible exhibit at the RAF Museum, unfortunately preserved without wings. Designed by R J Mitchell, (the designer of the Spitfire) the Southampton first entered RAF service in 1925. Eighteen Mk 1s were built with the gorgeous all-wooden (cedar and mahogany) hull remeniscent of the contruction of a boat. Southamptons were in RAF service for 11 years. This is the world's sole surviving example. restored after being beached in Felixstowe for many years. The later MkII had an aluminium hull and 40 of those were built.

ZD948 was acquired from British Airways as a TriStar 500 just four months earlier. Here being a TriStar C1 passenger aircraft of the RAF it was still wearing the remains of its BA colours and 'last two' of its former registration G-BFCA. The aircraft would be converted into a K1 tanker version in 1985 and then a KC1 tanker-transport version with cargo door. It taxies out here for a full-length take-off from Brize. Departing before it is Hercules XV217 countering the crosswind from the north.

This weird looking aircraft was part of the ill-fated Nimrod AEW3 project that was cancelled in favour of the Sentry due to massive cost overruns and delays. It was later later transferred to the fire section at RAF Kinloss as 8968M (RAF maintenance serial) where it was later broken up, a sad episode in British Aviation history.
