The photo highlights the large size of the Vickers Vildebeest and Vincent. The Vincent was a an army cooperation and light bomber variant for 'Imperial policing', with an external fuel tank carried in place of the Vildebeest's torpedo. J7782 Hawker Hornbill probably seen here in July 1926 at Brooklands in its final configuration of one central radiator. Only one Hornbill was ever built and made its final flight in May 1933. From my collection.

Shot taken a few minutes after take off from Heathrow. Not much of the main runway or original buildings is left. During WWII Wellingtons, Warwicks and Hurricanes were built here. After the war the Viking, Valetta, Varsity, Viscount, Vanguard, 1-11 and VC-10 were built here. The airfield closed on 25 Dec 1989. The Brooklands Museum is near the top right of the picture housing many aircraft plus cars from its time as a race circuit.

This is the Vimy Commercial prototype that first received the provisional registration K-107. Took off from Brooklands for a flight to Cape Town on 24 January 1920, but crashed at Tabora, Tanganyika (Tanzania) on 27 February. Photo from: Imperial War Museums

Of the 177 Wellesleys, the last 80 were serialled in the L block and delivered between February and May 1938. The old Townend cowling ring remained standard issue. Built in 1940 by Hawker Aircraft Ltd. at Kingston-on-Thames, Z2389 served with five different RAF Squadrons in 1941, including the American volunteer 71 'Eagle' Squadron at Martlesham Heath. As part of emergency war supplies for Russia, Z2389 was crated up and joined the 767 Regiment of the Red Air Force on the Kola Peninsula. On the 20th of June 1942, it was shot down. Z2389's pilot F/Lt Ivan Kalashnikov survived the forced landing. Fifty years later, Z2389 was found, and its remains arrived at Brooklands on the 14th October. Restoration took from 1999 to 2019 - now with Squadron code XR-J.

This was the sole prototype of a small 1936 fighter, designed to Air Ministry specification F.5/34 but built as a private venture, hence 'PVO'; the letter O identified Vickers in test registrations. The Venom performed quite well, powered by a Bristol Aquila engine of only 625 hp, but the Aquila was cancelled and larger radials did not fit. Photo from: Vickers
