The SAAF ordered six English Electric Canberra B(I) 12s and three T 4s in 1962. Delivered to 12 Sqd during 1963 and 1964, they were extensively used in as tactical bombers and high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft. 459 was delivered to the RAF as WJ617 20 January 1954, to the SAAF 16 April 1964. One B(I) 12 was shot down over Angola, five were sold to Peru along with one T 4. One T 4 went to the SAAF Museum whereas 459 became a gate guardian at AFB Waterkloof. Photographer unknown

One of eight Transalls stored at Waterkloof following their withdrawal from service in 1993. They remained in storage until sold for spares in 2008 and were scrapped in 2009. The only SAAF Transall to survive is 337 which re-located to the SAAF museum at Swartkop in 1994.

Built at Castle Bromwich in the later stages of WW2, TE213 went to 33 MU at RAF Pershore on 23 May 1945. Flown with 135 other Spitfire Mk IXs to RAF Fayid for delivery to the SAAF 1 July 1947. Taken on charge 4 July 1947 and given the serial 5518. Retired in 1954 and placed on gate guardian duty at AFB Waterkloof, with the fake serial W5851 which was later 'corrected' to W5518. Restored to airworthy condition and painted as 5553 in 1995. This was another Mk IXE from the same batch that suffered a Cat 2 near Vereeniging 8 December 1950. Rebuilt to airworthy condition it crashed during a display at the Swartkop Air Show in 2000. Photographer unknown

Delivered to the SAAF in the mid 1950s, loaned to the Rhodesian Air Force as R4152 between December 1972 and 1979 when it was returned to the SAAF. Registered as ZU-DFH in 2003 with the SAAF Historic Flight and current with the SAAF Museum at AFB Swartkop lthough. Photographer unknown

Delivered to the USAAF as MA793 in 1944. To the South African Air Force as 5601 in 1948. In a children's playground in Pretoria from 1954. Removed in 1967 and restored to airworthy condition. Flew again marked as PT672 in 1975 carrying the SAAF's WW2 roundel where the centre is orange as opposed to the RAF's red as this photo shows. Sold as N930LB in 1986. Later marked as EN398. To Rolls-Royce in 1999 then to the TAM Museum, Sao Carlos, Brazil in 2000. Flew again in 2002. Cancelled from the register in 2013. Photographer unknown

When the USA refused export license for further C-130s for South Africa, they turned to France and bought nine Transall C-160Z which arrived between July 1969 and December 1970. They served with 28 Sqd at AFB Waterkloof alongside the Hercules until the fleet was retired at the end of 1992. Here seen at the then AFB Waterkloof during the 1980 open day. Photographer unknown
